Wouldn't you just call a detective instead of just investigating it yourself

That's why I say a loved one, because what if they aren't answering the door for hours on end, and then you end up calling the cops and it turns out that they were just sleeping with headphones on etc. If it was genuinely a loved one like my parents for example, I'm barging in their house if they aren't answering the door and both cars are there, to make sure they are okay, for example.

That's why it's called a welfare check

If they're already missing for a certain amount of time and theyre not answeing your calls the first step is to call the cops, and not investigate the property yourself. Because if you're at the point where they're already missing and your friends and family are offering to help, call the cops first and decline their offer to help to preserve the area.

What I meant was more along the lines of you knock on their door, nobody answers so you enter the home to make sure they're okay, and then you find out that they're missing. I agree with you, however. You are correct and TIL.

Tbh my first instinct would be to try and reach out to them in any way I can, if they still don't respond, of course I'll check the house. But if I have the suspicion that they're missing after I check the house and their cars are still there, I'd leave the house without touching anything else and call the police and report a missing person's report. Because it would be questionable that their vehicles are there, but they are not. Especially when all attempts to contact them have failed.

I'd make sure no one else can open or enter the house until the cops arrive. So that there's absolute certainty that after you discover that they're missing its only you that has entered and left the house in that time.

Exactly what I meant, I couldn't have said it better. As they say, the real LPT is in the comments, lmao. I agree with you.

Real talk, I understood your intent so just wanted to clarify further regarding the LPT itself

It's better to err on the side of caution as people say

I don't base my self-esteem on internet comments. But it sounds like you do and you should seek therapy for that.
