hey! im 18, currently working full time at walmart, and hate where i live. i dont have many things to me except my clothes and some collectibles (CDs, DVDs, records, trinkets, etc.) and am working 40 hr a week with a 16 per hour pay. basically, im grinding it out but what should be a basic to do list if id like to make this move? any tips? will accept any and all help :-]
im aware as to how expensive it is, ive visited twice for a week and stayed with a family member that lived there. hes told me basically alot of what id need to do financially if i were to move in with him (and chances are i will) but im also looking for general tips in case i end up having to move on my own
Ah, okay. I’m glad you’re not just jumping in blind. I would recommend staying in his good graces as long as possible and to be saving up an emergency fund(ideally 3-6 months of pay) in case anything comes up.
Have some extra cash built up for sure. There is the physical cost of moving and then there are all the extra costs once you arrive.
Things like paying for a new drivers license and auto registration. You can maybe put it off for a while but a ticket can be a headache and cost more in the long run. Along that line you will need to change car insurance if you have a car, which might cost more. Might need to switch cell service which could involve extra fees. If you have to get your own place you could have fees and deposits for the rental and utilities. Depending on how you do your banking, opening new accounts and transferring money might incur fees. Also health insurance changes between programs available in each state might cause a change in you costs
One other hidden expense when leaving Florida to go to Massachusetts is state income tax. At hourly wages like you earn at Walmart, the state tax won't be too bad, but it could still be an unexpected decrease in your available cash.
Not trying to scare you off of the move, just better to anticipate these things ahead of time than to be surprised when you get there.

this is the most helpful yet, thank you! i do not have a car yet for multiple reasons, but mainly financially it would be an incredible burden on me to have that if i want to properly move out. i do plan on saving up as much as i could and i do not plan on working at walmart up there (since there’s none specifically where id move to, allston) and intend on finding a new job. working a service job isnt an issue for me and im preparing to work more than one. ive been looking into health insurance, EBT, etc. once im up there as well. im on medicaid here so i gotta see if i can transfer to a service up there and such. thank you still!! ill keep all this in mind :-]
Buy winter clothes…
first thing on my to do list, i know that winters up there aren’t easy and snow/extreme cold will be hard to accustom to as well
Don't buy the winter clothes in Florida. Move not in the middle of winter, and then get stuff from thrift stores up there.

If you choose to own a car...
Keep rock salt in the trunk with some cardboard. And put the wipers up before a snow storm. 🤞😁

I would say document(like take a pic) everything you’re taking as things can end up lost or “missing”. I don’t have a ton of insight but I hope it works out for the best :)

i intend to! ive just been working since ive graduated school to save up and get an education up there rather than here
Get a job first before moving.
ive been looking at applications and job openings online, its not for a few months that id be moving but i still have been continuously looking (i also know im gonna probably need to pick up more than one job as well to make it)
As long as you understand what to expect. I assume you have motive that we’re not aware of. Regardless, as long as you’re grounded on the reality, I’m sure you’ll figure it out.
