How would purging non-work related, annoying email chains (birthday, baby, anniversary etc) bite me in the ass? I don't need to see that stuff and it distracts from work.

I can see some dumb ass using the chain to relay important information, possibly on another subject. You will miss this information, the company will go down in flames and you will be blamed, not the sender who is an idiot. Something like that

To clarify, annoying = non work-related email chains (endless reply all's, birthdays, baby announcements, anniversaries, shameless ass-kissing chains, etc.).

Please don't go nuking valid work emails, I like you all and want you to stay employed!
