This would rule out a lot of athletic shoes, shoes sub $100, not to mention that a lot of dressier options have fake stitching to throw people off.

I hate fake stitching, like seriously they put in all that effort to make it look real when they could have just made it real.

My Columbia hiking shoes lost their soles with very low wear anywhere else on the shoe. I took them to a cobbler and they glued and stitched the soles on both for $30. I've been wearing them for work 3x/week for over a year and they are holding up great.

I am a big fan of Columbia shoes myself. I didn't know you could do that with them.

TheW83 t1_ivhhigd wrote

I didn't either. I thought they were just going to glue it properly and was a bit surprised when my wife brought them back.

Would also eliminate crepe soles for chelsea boots which are like walking on clouds. Great if you live in a walkable city like NYC.

a stitched or welted sole is more expensive to produce and won't be found on lower quality footwear. and the higher quality footwear tends to be made of better materials and will last longer.

also, this type of shoe can usually be resoled.

I suggest Shoe Goo for this, it’s about $10 for 3oz, compared to the “premium” stuff $30 for 1oz

It really depends on the purpose of the shoe/boot, I work in a wet environment so Shoe Goo only lasts about 3 weeks before failing sadly. Otherwise it’s a great product

Especially boots.

Bought some BearPaw hiking boots to wear doing yardwork. Sole came off after 3 days.

Yup bought Salomon hiking shoes since people said they were good. Absolute garbage, soles came off within a few days. Had to reglue a couple times and those were like 130ish?

BGFalcon85 t1_ivjfrw5 wrote

Try Merrell. I'm on year 3 of yard work (plus another year of normal wear) on my Merrell hiking shoes. I bought another identical pair last year for normal wear.

I’ll try them, it’s so hard to find actually decent footware I swear, price can be meaningless.

I've had a lot of luck with Brooks shoes staying together. They aren't stitched but the glue seems great. I have just put 500 miles on one pair and they don't have much wear on the soles either.

coconut_rambo t1_ivft3pe wrote

After March 2020 i recently wore my leather shoes and had hardly walked when I noticed one shoe was loose compared to the other one. The stitches had chipped of the rubber sole as they hardened due to non-usage. A little later same happened to the other shoe.

My badminton shoes hardly last for 3-6 months. Mostly they tear at the wrinkles or the fabric tears. The glue normally doesn't come off, and if they do I just glue them back and get going.

I have to disagree.

What if you're buying two shoes?

[deleted] OP t1_ivf7ece wrote

This LPT very obviously only applies to a transaction where there's a single shoe involved.

Now leave with your entitled two-footed questions before I limp my way to you and kick your butt.

Is it true that most one-legged people steal their shoes from shop displays?

ReykjavikRed t1_ivjilta wrote

Well then it's not really something to worry about, because even if one shoe comes apart, you have a spare.

Doc Martens. Three years. Still going strong. Actually want another pair in a wilder colour.

pherreck t1_ivfnwgl wrote

There's a YouTube channel, Rose Anvil, where a leather worker dissects boots by cutting them in half vertically from toe to heel. He's not a fan of Doc Martens.

I'm not aware of any running shoes, sneakers, basketball shoes, or high heels that have stitched soles. But yes, boots with stitched soles generally last longer and are repairable by a cobbler or by the company that made them.

Aren't there any cobblers in the neighbourhood you take new shoes to? Isn't it standard practice to have new shoes sewn up by these craftsmen for about ten per cent their price before you start using them?

1

Hankman66 t1_ivfgu6v wrote

Standard practice? Maybe in the Victorian era.

5

fieroar1 t1_ivfktap wrote

Ahh, those were the days! But, seriously, getting new shoes sewn up is the one sure way to prevent the soles coming unstuck, trust me.

You can't always tell this by looking. I had a pair of Doc Martens where the whole sole fell off after 3 years for no good reason. They looked stitched but were glued

Tyrone90000 t1_ivi5hzl wrote

Also if you are one of those humans with more than the average number if legs probably consider buying a pair.

I never had that problem, even at the time I only for 50 bucks shoes.

Now I am wearing 120-150€ shoes and never had that problem. Glued shoes have sometimes also the advantage that they have the possibility to replace the sole. Not sure if stitched ones can have that so easily.

HelixFish t1_ivj1o89 wrote

I had a pair of Asolo hiking boots for many years. I had one of the soles become unglued a few miles into the backcountry. Backpacking miles back to the car on the slippery nylon shank really sucked.
