I personally ribbon the zipper pulls and have a bag tag. Have more than one identifier: luggage has it rough in transit and stuff falls off all the time.
If you can, get brightly colored or patterned luggage for the same reason, thousands of bags are black or navy or brown: much fewer are brilliant green.

Good tip. I carry cheap luggage because it's going to get banged up by baggage handlers. I have always wound some blue painter's tape around the handles so I can identify it on the carousel.

Years ago, while waiting for our luggage after a flight, the recording to make sure you had the right bag said, "Check your tags, there are lots of black suitcases with red ribbons."

You better knot it on there good then.

Find an old ugly tie you should have thrown out and attach a piece to every handle of your luggage. It will be unique beyond a red ribbon

Luggage shops will happily sell "unique" bag tags.
