If you frequent a bar ir restaurant, people notice if you tip nicely consistently. You'll start to get special considerations here and there.

Agreed. It's impossible to make an actual living in the industry. I know you're being sarcastic but I'm trying to help. My bank account has a negative balance but I still tip and I want people who have actual money to do the same.

If your account is negative you shouldn’t be going places that expect/require a tip. But you know this.

While it’s courageous to consistently tip and encourage others to do so…. Employers should really pay a fair wage, pushing them and lawmakers to do so is really the only way to change the system.

Sadly, in the US the system is designed to profit off the masses and keep many of us struggling.

This. Tipping culture is all about underpaying workers. Their income is not my responsibility, it is their boss who they should be angry with. Demand higher pay from your boss instead of getting mad because of customer tips.

It is what it is. If you don't like it, stay home and drink by yourself in your depression cave.

If you have a regular bartender (or several) in your local watering hole, they're probably hooking you up. A free drink every once in a while, or maybe they forget to add one or two to your tab. Tip them well. A little Christmas bonus can also be a nice gesture that will be well appreciated.

I’m not giving someone $20 because they handed me $5 worth of beer.

I'm a pizza delivery guy. Sure, the customers who tip well stand out, but honestly, being genuine and friendly are key. I'd rather deliver to some of my elderly or low income customers who are nicer to me and don't tip or add like $2 than some of my more arrogant customers that tip $10-15.

Not saying I'm not thrilled with the larger tips, and that's what pays the bills, but attitude and courtesy will have me do subtle things like bring the beverage I'm pretty sure you forgot to order, or making sure the little things are done the way you like.

Also, I can get on board with the $20.23 tipping trend from both sides (I treat my fellow service industry comrades well when I order)

Does the owner make less enough to make a big impact to his monthly salary? How much does the owner really take home and would he miss a few pints here and there?

You can talk about principles etc..but the business is nothing without regular customers and the staff to serve them.

If you go to a bar enough, you'll get known as a regular regardless of how you tip. They'll learn what you drink, eat, etc. Your tipping habbits won't make a huge difference. Used to work in the industry and we really didn't think of people as "supporters of the industry" or go above and beyond for nice tippers. If you come into the bar and drink, you get served like everyone else.

You do realize that that type of job is not intended to make an actual living off of, correct?

Service Industry must fight for fair wages that are predictable and not make it a gamble.

Citizens will support service industry workers who will fight for fair wages.

Businesses that cannot afford fair wages must be shutdown because it doesn’t make good “Business” sense.

Business owners are pitting customers and workers against each other when they should be figuring out to how to run a profitable business.

I would amend OP's post to say "if you can afford it."

More than a few places that I go to regularly often "forget" things on my tab. I don't really ever tip less than 35% or 40% at those places. Every time I bring up the missing stuff, they just shrug it off. So I put it into their tip instead. I go to the places often enough and spend enough that I'm confident it's not hurting the business in a meaningful way. In fact, it's part of what makes me come back when I'm considering where to go on any given day.

OP purposely excluded that part and said elsewhere in the comments he continues to tip generously with a negative balance in his bank account.

Just because the owner has taken on a shit load of liability which results in a higher income doesn't make it ok to skim off their business and success.
