I would have thought that would reduce the ability to see. Interesting.

On top of my head, and taking the example of VR: being able to see my hands in VR and how they line up with the background improves my spatial perception. It gives me a sense of how far my hands are from my body and that helps me determine how far external objects are from my hands. I imagine it’s a similar effect when you light up your wheel and can track your hands on it while you look at the road.

Driving down dark country roads with headlights coming at you is when it's especially useful. Even if you don't have this issue give it a shot and report back the results.

I’ll give it a try next time I’m driving at night. I imagine my cell phone flashlight should be enough light?

My guess is that the light interior to your vehicle there basically causes your pupils to close up a little bit. Which is for many people will actually make their vision sharper.

But that would make it harder to see at night.

Yes it does cut light, but sharpens vision. So things in dark would be harder to see, but anything with light would be better

If you have trouble seeing while driving at night you should not drive at night. Do not risk killing someone for your own convenience.

If you have trouble seeing while driving at night, you should probably surrender your license. You are a danger to yourself and others.
