Ice for the first 24 hours to stop it spreading; then treat with heat, 20 minutes every couple hours (a hot wash cloth will do). The heat will promote blood flow through the area and help your body reabsorb the escaped blood.

Source: these were the arm care instructions for bruising when I worked at a plasma center, most donors had their affected arm cleared for use again within 3 days.

This is what a nurse told me after a very badly misplaced IV left a hand sized bruise on my inner arm. It worked extremely well to speed up healing.
