LPT: Don't use Opera's bult-in VPN.

LPT2: Don't use Opera as your browser at all.

Why the 2nd LPT? What's wrong with using Opera in general?

tejanaqkilica t1_j6i3l0j wrote

There is no real reason to use Opera.

It's just another Chromium based web browser which is owned by a Chinese company.

I had no idea. Thanks for pointing that out.
Makes this LPT totally moot.

Yeah, Opera was sold to Chinese consortium 5-6 years ago. Most if not all of the dev team left the company and they founded Vivaldi.

Opera is Opera in nothing but name at this point.

you do not, ever, under any circumstance use ANY FREE VPN services. Thank you. Also 90% of all VPN are owned by 23 chinese companies.

Thanks again for that tidbit :)

So what's a good VPN? Where I don't sacrifice my privacy away.

self hosted OpenVPN. You can host it on AWS, behind your home router, really anywhere. On top of that you add PiHole and enjoy internet free of ads and annoyances.

You can also use things that are heavily marketed for a few years already like Nord, Surf. unless you're trying to run darknet drug market should be fine. These are convinient, as long as they're not owned by chinese company you shall be fine.

WireGuard is infinitely easier to configure nowadays.

I guess I'd have to read up a little bit. But the knowledge will be worth it.
Good Tip. Tips Hat :)

thing is , you don't really need vpn, unless you're going to sit at MCD on their "free" wifi and do work related stuff, or banking for that matter.

Yeah I guess, except for some specific times and specific reasons I guess.

ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland and banned in China. Do with this information what you will.

2

Minkowski-Butterfly t1_j6immtz wrote

You can do so, if your only goal is a different IP geolocation and you don't care about your data. But yeah, I wouldn't recommend it

meanwhile *proxy continues to exist, forever forgotten*

Minkowski-Butterfly t1_j6j3qih wrote

Of course a proxy will suffice, but most people using a VPN to watch some show dont even know what it is

Dr-Rjinswand t1_j6hv1l8 wrote

No such thing as a free VPN. You just pay with your data.

Minkowski-Butterfly t1_j6hwfxr wrote

True, but if you only use it to alter your IP Geolocation its fine

darkgothmog t1_j6hzscd wrote

Even then, they can always decrypt on the fly what you do, so no it’s not really fine even just for countering geolocation

Minkowski-Butterfly t1_j6i19c5 wrote

I don't quite understand what you mean. Of course everything you route through Opera VPN can be seen by Opera but it is still forwarded to the respective endpoint at which it gets in contact with your destination server thus changing you IP geolocation

2

Not_Snow_Jon t1_j6i1s69 wrote

LPT ignore morons who give tips like this, if you need a vpn pay for it because opera will just sell your data or give it to your ip if asked

disgruntled_joe t1_j6hvjj1 wrote

Does it actually connect to a server somewhere or is it one of those "software" VPNs that does nothing to hide your external traffic? And if it does connect to a server somewhere how do you know the traffic still isn't being logged?

Minkowski-Butterfly t1_j6hwodk wrote

Since it is free and its the Opera browser which isn't exactly known for good privacy, I think you should definetly not use it for privacy reasons. It provides a quick and easy way to switch up your IP location though
