Yes, this has "saved" me more times than I can count. I’d also add, make sure any person you go with has the same social tolerance level as you. This is another way you may not be able to leave when you want to.

[edit] the tip is probably more about turning down offers to go with someone in their car than bringing your own. I stopped getting trapped when I started saying, "No thanks. I’ll meet you there."

Look up services called Uber, Lyft, and taxi cabs if you want to leave but the driver you came with wants to stay

They are relatively new but I have a good feeling about them catching on

Not everyone lives is city's or areas where that is possible

This is the most redundant, pointless LPT I have ever seen. It assumes an awful lot about the person and the gathering and is basically as helpful as saying, "If you're thirsty, drink something." No duh.
