Really depends on the relationship I guess.

We've done joint accounts almost exclusively. We only opened a separate account for her recently when online sportsbetting became legal in our state, since you can't fund two accounts from the same bank account.

We’ve done something similar but also very different. We have kept our own accounts, but the money is very much ‘ours’ regardless of which account it’s in.

But we are privileged to not worry too much about money and both have a reasonably similar approach to money and value-for-money.

It's almost like communication is key to a good relationship. For some relationships, joint money is fine. For some relationships, separate is better. There is no one-size-fits-all advice for this kind of thing.

I agree! There's no reason to strip either partner of all of their power and security. And money is power.

Splitting it into separate accounts holds each one accountable for their spending. The evidence will be clear. No he said, she said.

I think it would mean a more peaceful choice.

You should have signs pretty early in the relationship if your partner is irresponsible with money so you can plan accordingly. Also consider a prenuptial agreement; it just keeps things simpler.

sounds like you're planning for failure.

And then how do i send her to buy things without having to transfer money every time.

I earn 5 times what my partner does, a joint account seems egregious to me.

Why?

Yeah why? I’ve earned more then 10 to 20x what my partner earns per year. She also takes care of the house, does the majority of the cooking, takes care of most of the bill paying, sets up my doctors appointments. With the hours I work she is indispensable to me. Plus, she also raised the kids when I was in school and in training and never home. She has earned and still more than earns her cut. Every relationship is different, but just because you earn more means nothing.
