“Excellent customer service” is all you need. It’s a review, not a novel.

Counterpoint: if I read an anecdote like the one in the title, I will believe it. If I read "excellent customer service" I will suspect it's a fake review.

Okay…

“Excellent customer service. Really took great care of me when helping resolve an issue with XYZ.”

It was great they gave me free stuff to fix my issue. Is that any better?

"there was a mistake but it was resolved well" is just a more useful review. Slightly different context, but looking through online seller reviews and seeing lots of 5 stars only to read the comments and see they were nearly all fucked up orders but they got a refund so great seller, it makes reviews useless

Calm-asutra t1_j9x8xjm wrote

Oh yes thank you OP for mentioning this.

People nowadays take advantage of kindness. Instead, just give a 5 star and stimulate their business by visiting often.

Who knows, you may get a good connection with them and have a great time having a good trustworthy place to eat or shop ... rather than making other vultures come in and destroy it for them.

Whenever I order a cheap item on Amazon that was imported from China I always receive a follow up letter in the mail from the seller offering a Amazon Gift Card in return for a 5-star review. So whenever you see a Chinese item at Amazon with 70% or more 5-star reviews, suspect that this is what is happening. 5-stars (on Amazon) doesn't mean all the time that the object is outstanding. I use to report this to Amazon but they don't really care to hear it and will do nothing about it. But here a way around that. So okay, write that 5-star review. Show these scammers the review online and receive your gift card. Apply the card to your account immediately then delete the review. And return the item! Boom! Money refunded + $25!

I read the bad reviews and judge if these are legitimate complaints or user error.

That reminds me. I got one of these for a small heater I bought a second one of. Great little heater. It's just weird they wanted to bribe me to review it.

Alternatively you can check the 4 and 2 star reviews. They're mostly by humans and genuine.

4

kenda1l t1_j9z0rla wrote

This is what I do. Occasionally I will check the 3 stars too, but I pay no attention to the 1's and 5's because they are all inevitably biased. I also like to look for ones with updates or where the person has had the item for longer than a few days because it helps you learn how well it holds up.

PT_024 t1_j9z2ib7 wrote

True. I still remember when I was shopping for a mousepad this dude literally had a review updated for like 3 years. Ngl one the best things I've ever read and one of the reasons I bought the product.

Physical-Ad9606 t1_j9zfsiy wrote

The one stars are from people complaining that the packaging was damaged. That's not the manufacturers fault.

Docteh t1_j9z2q0t wrote

With Banggood, the meta is to look at 5 star reviews that are negative in what they say.

5 stars: this is a piece of shit that only charged once.

Generally don’t be an asshole to costumer service, even if it does take longer than usual. If you’re a patient and understanding costumer we’re rewarding your patience with some free stuff. Source: worked as a service technician for a well known electronics brand and we knew when it took too long to repair or replace some claims. But if the costumer was patient and understanding we stuffed a lot of extra stuff in their packages like battery packs, SD cards, or some accessories.

LPT: always take care of your customer service needs when you don't need to be somewhere else any time soon. It takes the stress and pressure off both you and them to know that you aren't in any hurry. Honestly, this is the best way to do any errands or appointments if possible.

That's all well and good. But if I hear "it's our policy" one more goddamn time...

cld1984 t1_j9yzi73 wrote

100%. I worked in retail for ages and my retailer had a policy that every employee in the store was empowered to satisfy a customer’s problem up to $50 at their discretion.

I saw an article years ago while still working there where someone decided to let the world know about this’d. Except their point wasn’t that if you do happen to have an issue, any employee will be more empowered to help you there than elsewhere. Their point was that you can get $50 worth of free shit whenever you went there. I fought people in the comments for a few minutes before giving up.

People suck. Dangle a fucking carrot in front of the average person and they’ll eat it, the fishing pole, and your arm before asking for more.

Just take a fucking bite and leave it for someone else to find…

asap_pdq_wtf t1_ja088r4 wrote

Especially now in our current everyone is pissed off world. I'm sure not gonna argue with a customer over a $50 item. You never know what they're capable of.

I made the mistake of asking for a discount while another customer was also haggling. But I was buying 2 of the same thing.

She said "No I cant do anything. This is the price." But then kinda gave me the eye brow wriggle. I asked again later out of earshot of everyone else, if I can get a discount if I bought 2, and she actually gave me a pretty solid discount.

It was an expensive item that I wouldnt have bought without the discount and I had to buy 2 because I have twins. I would have definitely gone elsewhere without the discount. She gained a customer

So additional LPT: ask out of earshot of other customers..

On the contrary, I once received a refund to change my 1 star review to a 3 star review (the item broke within a week). After I received the refund I changed the rating back and added a bit about how they bribed me to change the rating

That's a different situation from what I think OP is writing about. It's not uncommon for a small business in a community to not only fix the problem but also then offer you a discount. If they are offering you a discount to repair a review without fixing the initial problem, they absolutely deserve to get drug over the coals for it

9

Scorcher646 t1_j9yhehm wrote

Now if a large conglomerate gives you discount or free items, absolutely mention it online because f*** conglomerates

Not true, people love to see genuine reviews. This won't stop people from taking advantage. Shitty people are shitty people.

The precedent here would be that this business is Abe to admit fault and be accountable. Studies have shown that something like over 90 percent of customers would repeat business if the business just admits fault and is accountable.

So we're not people? I own a picture framing business. I would give discounts to my fellow art community knowing how hard it is to sell art, and then word of mouth goes around about how great a deal my place is, and people would come in clearly looking for a great deal they heard about. When I look at the amount of discounts I've given away in the past 8 years, it's something like $150,000 or more... meanwhile I'm struggling and in debt, and I paid my employees more than I ever made. I rent, owe taxes, but I do this because I love it and am good at it. I've had to drop more of the discounts while at the same time costs have gone up (lumber is through the roof), so more and more people are upset that something that cost $200 in 2018 is now $270. Anyway, sorry if this sounds like I'm griping, but when you say "power to the people" it's very exclusionary, as if we're not people. In reality, I have given thousands of people extra cash in their pocket they can use elsewhere in the economy, and I've paid my employees much higher than minimum wage. I'm not some enemy.
