Specifically, www.onetonline.org and drill down to your location (state, major metropolitan area) then you can see what your job pays, the low, the mean, the average, and the high. You can even see what degrees people have for that position.

I used to teach students career preparation including how to negotiate salaries, for more than 15yrs.

As someone who has been on the other end of these conversations, knowing market rates is good but dont bank on those. Its easy for a company to say "we dont pay that here". Market averages are just that, averages. High mixed with low.

But understand what you can be making somewhere else and what value you bring to the table. Go high, but not insultingly high because they will probably go low. Understand what your true bottom line is and hold it. If they reject it, let them know you are dissapointed in their offer and quietly start looking for another job. They wont pay you what you want and your best bet it go somewhere else.

Don’t be shy. You won’t get sacked for asking for more than they’re prepared to pay.

Every time you get some good feedback, print it out and keep it in a folder. Do the same for any projects or special assignments you complete. When you meet with your boss, pull out the folder and share all your good accomplishments that prove you're worth a raise.

This won’t help for this conversation but in the future, remember that the best way to get paid more is to move jobs. The norm nowadays is to move around different companies every handful of years, getting a pay increase each time. To that end, if you really want a raise, have a job offer hand. If you have another job offer at a higher pay, the company either has the choice to pay you more or let you leave. Even if they won’t match the offer, they can still meet you partway. Either way, you win.
