Reply to comment by ratbas in Shaw Farms barn collapsed. by ratbas

The type of storm is literally named after this geographical region. Stupidity is not a defense. Property owners are responsible for maintaining structures.

Given the facts of how our system operates, I'd say allowing such buildings to deteriorate can be a shrewd business decision. By allowing these storms to do their worst while all people are at home means that only property will be damaged - which includes the livestock. The result of which is a sizable insurance payout. I can certainly see that being a profitable strategy.

We'll never know if that was the intent - unless the owner has loose lips.

“Never seen a storm like it….”

The one today with the moderate snow.

Okay.

“That barn never fell down in the snow before! Must be the snow.”

They lost a few animals, but they'll remain open. Rather than do a GoFundMe I think a lot of us are just buying ice cream.

Free Money is the lure of gambling. How could I possibly lose?

Now that sports betting is legal, the state has a new stream of revenue that could be used to treat addictions of all sorts.

Will Lowell see a net reduction in the number of lives ruined by gambling, or will the ease of placing bets trap even more vulnerable people?

I feel so stupid having lived in Lowell for 10 years and hung out here for 16 and have yet to set foot in Arthur's. I'm just literally never anywhere near there in the morning.

Granted, I'm also a very big guy, and that place looks so small at times I feel claustrophic thinking about it. :D

I also like Owl's and have purchased takeout from there and ate at home.

Has anyone tried the new cafe by the train station? It's called Dragonfly.

I had some avocado toast there and it was good, but haven't tried anything else.

This is sort of hard to articulate but: the person didn't feed me soap, the business and its systems did, and institutional memory is a thing. Like, even above "make a tasty meal" in your rules for running a restaurant should be "don't poison your customers."

Letting someone (or a business) feed you requires a one-way trust - only one of us can get sick from this arrangement after all - and one-way trusts are brittle.

The worker gets all the forgiveness in the world but I'm not going back to the business.
