For decades at regular intervals a new tech emerges and grand predictions are made that it will eliminate programmers. Not just the hype media either. I'll never forget one of my "professors" predicting this. After all this time I'm kind of sick of hearing it. Great for getting investor money etc.

All along the way the number of programmers has grown, both in absolute numbers and as a percentage of the workforce.

Partly. Development time is only about 20-30%, most time is spent debugging and testing.

It's still a great new tool!

Agree 100%. I personally think Sam Altman and the Open AI Team are geniuses. I'm tired of saying it but I don't think we can really understand yet how it will positively disturb this world.

People who can manipulate inputs for ChatGPT (or its successors) to generate working code will be called as "programmers" in future.
