I am still new to Maine but that pole at Auburn Walmart seems magical and well known. I would definitely consider it.

Propose in a place that means something to you and your partner, not in a place that Reddit says will look nice on Instagram.

As the post said we are not from Maine so we don't have any places special to us. Could really care less about Instagram, just looking for somewhere that is beautiful to share this moment together. But thank you for your negative judgement and advice!

Go out and experience the state and find somewhere nice then.

Maine is a large state, would be helpful to know what part of it you will be visiting.

Wolfs Neck Farm near the state park. There's a fallow field with a picnic table overlooking the ocean. They used to do weddings there, but now it's just there on the drive in (from one direction) before the bridge where people go clamming. It's a gorgeous spot for a wedding (sadly they don't rent it out anymore), but just go and you'll be alone, in a field, with a table, and a gorgeous view of the bay and islands.

This is a truly great idea. Heck, renting one of their little cabins on the ocean would be an awesome engagement spot, too! Even a camp site would work. You could get there ahead of time and set up a romantic dinner table under the pine trees, right on the ocean. The campground there is incredibly beautiful. https://www.wolfesneck.org/visit/camping/

Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth at sunset! Lovely beach that has plenty of secluded spots with not a lot of walking required.

April is still mud season, so keep that in mind if you will be outdoors!

If you find a coastal location, find a hinged sea shell and slip the ring in it and “discover” it.

I proposed on top of Mount Battie in Camden. Don't worry, you can drive to the top.

The Port Clyde lighthouse in the midcoast is a lovely spot.

Edit: ALSO, CONGRATULATIONS! I just got married in October. It's dope.

The McDonalds mansion in Freeport is the classiest place in Maine as others have said.

Personally, I think either the East or West End in Portland would be a nice spot due to all sorts of restaurants and breweries and such not being so far. Or something along the Acadia Park Rd / Cadillac Mtn (just know you need reservations now).

If you want a relatively quiet spot check out Grafton Notch - nice waterfalls and mountains, short hikes with great views, and not too far from Bethel (which isn't huge but has some business)

If it’s nice out I would recommend the marginal way in ogunquit. It’s like 40 mins south of Portland but it’s a paved walking path with absurdly good views. Ogunquit also has plenty of places to to a celebration brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails, etc.

Idk maybe he should propose in a place that has meaning to you both. Or not. Who cares? You'll end up divorced anyway.
