Budget vacation and Maine don’t really go together unless you want to visit during winter.

Yeah, that's for sure especially for the hotel. Maybe try the black elephant hostel.

Is $200/nite for two people realistic? It sounds like we should up or budget to stay in Portland. Is staying nearby and driving to Portland a good idea or to really appreciate Portland you need to stay there?

My husband’s grandparents have stayed in I think it’s the Comfort Inn in Scarborough for a lower price and found it clean and comfortable. You have to drive ~15 minutes into downtown Portland but you’ll be closer to the beaches.

You won’t be able to stay anywhere in Portland for $200/night. I don’t even know if the hotel I suggested would realistically be $200/night during the summer. Browse Airbnb as well and keep an eye out for deals, is the best thing I can suggest.

Yeah not realistic...I just looked up a Hampton Inn near me in Portland (on the non-desirable end of Portland) and the rates are 180- 200 for a Saturday night in November.
