A Maine doctor was arrested today in Kennebunk on criminal charges related to her alleged illegal distribution of opioids and other controlled substances.
According to court documents, Merideth C. Norris, D.O., 52, of Kennebunk, allegedly prescribed opioids, and other controlled substances, outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose. Due to her dangerous prescribing, as a condition of her release, Norris cannot prescribe any Schedule II-V controlled substances.
Norris is charged in an indictment with 10 counts of illegal distribution of opioids and other controlled substances. The defendant made her initial court appearance on Oct. 26. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on the top counts. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Going to need a whole lot more evidence than what is stated in the article.
This will make doctors leave the already underserved state. Assuming there isnt extremely compelling evidence like statements from the doctor.
The doctor went to medical school and there is a good chance the patients were being helped, and who tf is a field agent to say otherwise? They couldnt put a bandaid on straight

It strikes me as very very odd. This woman opened a practice specifically for treating substance abuse patients and what I found online about her showed years of dedication to changing opioid prescribing policies and preventing the overprescribing that led to the epidemic in the first place. I fully expected her to be some off her rocker crazy trying to use meds in ways they’re not intended to be or someone likely abusing drugs herself. Neither seem to be the case. And frankly, I don’t know how she could be prescribing methadone and it not be considered within the scope of her practice when it’s literally with those in substance abuse treatment and many of those patients are prescribed suboxone and methadone. If she isn’t doing anything nefarious, this is terrifying and I agree it will just lead to more doctors being unwilling to treat populations with conditions that call for prescribing scheduled drugs.

Thing sounds like a Federal Witch Hunt to justify their task force. This whole write up is sensationalist garbage.

So yeah she could be prescribing these sorts of drugs. Doctor specializing in recovery and pain management writing prescriptions for these things seems normal.

10 counts covering three patients for six months.. 3 patients out of what, a hundred? two hundred?
Sounds like the New England Prescription Opioid Strike Force had to start showing results and this Medical Doctor was the unlucky target. There are a lot of names in that press release and I don't see any with M.D. or Pharm. D at the end of them. I would be much more interested to see what other doctors say about this than a press release from the Feds.
