There's a car for every person who ever went there, won some money and had a good time.

It’s not bad. I feel like I come out ahead one out of every three times I go, so definitely losing in the long run but better odds and more fun than scratch tickets.

Nice. You are who it's for, right? Someone who can enjoy themselves responsibly losing money. I don't mean that sarcastically. I'm just bummed of the stories of folks losing way more than they can.

Yeah you should never go to a casino if you can’t afford to lose money. I usually take a couple hundred bucks but I always go under the assumption that I’m going to leave broke. If that’s not ok with you, then don’t go.

They also have a neat feature where if you use the rewards card you can actually track how much you have won and lost, so if you ever need a reality check you can see how much in the negative you are. Over the last two years I’ve lost about $2000, which isn’t that bad considering how many hours of entertainment I’ve gotten.

Its fun you got that reddit handle. RealMainer.

I wonder how many after you tried and failed to get that name.

I wish we could see somehow.

There are a lot of people who get irrationally upset at my user name which is why you will often find my comments down voted for no good reason, but only in this subreddit lol. It’s ok though, I find it amusing.

There was a guy who posted on the Vermont subreddit called "arealvermonter" but he eventually had his account suspended because... Well... Public displays of mental health issues.

Point is, "arealmainer" is still up for grabs for that lucky lucky someone.

Serious question: What is "entertaining" about throwing money away? I honestly do not understand the allure of gambling.

Dopamine when you win

3

RealMainer OP t1_iu1f1t7 wrote

Dopamine is what your body releases to keep you gambling even though you are losing (the same way your body releases it to convince you to have a cigarette if your addicted). Serotonin is what gets released when you win!

Those two links you posted basically agree with me. For example the first thing the dopamine article suggests is that dopamine is released by something like smelling a cookie, and that’s what makes you want to eat the cookie, or at least continue to smell it. Dopamine is the motivator, while serotonin is the reward. If your body only received dopamine you would never want to leave the casino, but the serotonin released when you win is what makes you feel happy and satisfied and that’s why it’s much easier to leave after you have won big.

Settle down boys you’re both right. Addiction is complex. It’s both behavioral and physiological. By definition. The brain releases dopamine. The machine flashes bright lights and rings bells and makes you feel like a winner. It all works together, and as long as you think of it as entertainment, it can be a lot of fun. Keep in mind though that slot machines are essentially the crack cocaine of gambling. People tend to get addicted to them quickly and unexpectedly.

Yourbubblestink t1_iu1vhrq wrote

Serious answer: people get into it for the thrill of winning. From an entertainment perspective it’s no different than giving money to witness a show that’s exciting. Going on a roller coaster. Jumping from a plane. Listening to music that’s stimulating. Watching a race car that’s fast. It’s just another form of entertainment that some people get pleasure From.

Also it’s been around forever. The people that nailed Jesus to the cross even gambled for his clothes, for Gods sake lol

Some people think it’s stupid to eat fast food. Or go to the movies.

What do you play there that's fun? I went inside once, never really been to casinos, and the slots all just looked so alienating and basically dull. I didn't really know even how to start at the poker tables!

mrguyorama t1_iu1ev1y wrote

There is not a single thing inside of a casino that is "fun" unless you are susceptible to the dopamine rush of putting something on the line. If you don't find the possibility of losing fun, then you will never find a casino fun, because every game, decision, styling choice, smell, etc is highly optimized around pushing that specific dopamine button and getting you addicted.

Konami, you know, that video game company, makes slot machines. They are not fun because they aren't supposed to be fun to play. They exist only as a legally distinct version of a skinner box.

RealMainer OP t1_iu1flo9 wrote

You definitely gotta play around a bit to find a machine that you like. I personally like machines that I feel like I can manipulate a little (even though that’s probably all in my head) to improve my odds. There is an old school machine that I have figured out a little system with that’s fun to play for that reason, but there are other games that have cool animations and stuff that make them fun to play even if you are losing.

Do they serve complimentary drinks at that casino Vegas-style? I've always justified it in Vegas because I'd play small and enjoy myself, and end up losing less than I would've paid if I was buying drinks.

1

PillClinton710 t1_iu18ajh wrote

Absolutely not. They have drink girls that walk around. Drinks range from $5-$10+, and if you're not an absolutely outstanding tipper, don't expect your drinks in a very timely manner.

It’s also late at night and raining. I wasn’t trying to imply that the casino was losing business, I just thought the scene was cool enough for a photo.

It's a fun night out if you can afford to lose some money. Tightest slots I've ever played. I do like the freebie hotel rooms during the week though, and they cook a decent steak in the pub.

2

RealMainer OP t1_iu1qj7o wrote

Honestly I probably wouldn’t go if they didn’t keep sending me free slot money and rooms. They give me $75-100 in free play plus a hotel room. On a lucky night I never have to spend a dime of my own money unless I want food or drinks.

1

Blue_Eyed_ME t1_iu1titx wrote

Haha.. samesies. It's fun to play penny slots, have a cocktail or two, then just take the elevator up to a freebie room. I'm not terribly lucky, but I can make $50 last a very long time, and some of the machines are a hoot.

RealMainer OP t1_iu4h5th wrote

The amount I spend at the casino, except for tips and drinks, is automatically tracked by using the casino rewards card. I can see exactly how much I have won and lost.
