“Leaving twitter”. It’s the new “moving to Canada”.

I hear Nova Scotia is nice in the summer.

Lieutenant_Joe t1_iwwzhd5 wrote

S’nice in general. They get a lot of snow sometimes, but the climes are a bit more mild since it’s almost completely surrounded by ocean. I went to college in Halifax one year. Granted, though… that’s a coastal city. I wasn’t inland.

IamSauerKraut t1_iwwzmpd wrote

I've been several times. Were I to move to Canada, outside of Quebec City, it would be to Nova Scotia.

ppitm t1_iwxhrb9 wrote

If literally half the U.S. government quit because of a deranged tyrant, you would definitely consider moving to Canada.

Well Twitter is actually going to shit. Big name people are leaving left and right.

Why not discord? I’ve never used mastodon. What’s different/better about it?

2

speeb OP t1_iwxi5pf wrote

Going old man here for a minute...I just don't get Discord. I mean, I've used it some, but I don't enjoy it. So to me, I see Discord more like a chat room rather than "microblogging."

CombinationSea6976 t1_ix003ab wrote

I’m staying with Twitter. If at all else, I’m leaving Reddit. And this sub totally sucks.. full of Communists!

BurningPage t1_ix3wsbp wrote

Am I a boomer? I can’t figure this out based on your link.

1

speeb OP t1_ix42u3w wrote

Haha. Mastodon is a Twitter-like platform. Big difference is that it's entirely open, anyone can create an instance, and all the instances can talk to each other.

I set this one up so that folks can have a local group that is Maine-centric (the Local timeline). But having an account still allows you to follow accounts from any other Mastodon instance (the Federated timeline).

2

BurningPage t1_ix42y59 wrote

Ok so I’d love to join this group but the server is accusing me of blocking cookies. I am not.

1

speeb OP t1_ix5vluc wrote

Was going to PM you, but it isn't working for some reason. Were you able to get past the cookie issue? It could be due to an ad blocker, though I haven't had any issues with mine. Or maybe if you're in incognito mode or opening links inside your reddit app.

At what point/page is it doing that?

2

BurningPage t1_ix5y4ap wrote

It might be an issue with my phone. Will try on desktop later!

Why are people leaving Twitter?

−3

speeb OP t1_iwwmdhu wrote

Short version: Elon Musk bought it, threw it into a dumpster, and set it on fire.

It's truly wild. Just search the news for Twitter and you'll stay busy for hours.

11

Ironbird207 t1_iwwpaa0 wrote

Mass exodus because Musk fired half the company and then demanded the rest work 80+ hours a week. He gave them an option to leave for 3 months pay and everyone took it. Those that decided to stay are probably not gonna stay for much longer considering the workload that will get dumped on them. It's a damn dumpster fire. IMO it's awesome, hope the same happens to Facebook. Mastodon seems promising as there are no algorithms and it's decentralized, seems more natural of a social platform.

dinah-fire t1_iwwnv85 wrote

If it doesn't crash in the next week, I'll be shocked. (Although I've never used it, so I have no personal investment.)

Two reasons:

  1. Musk's vision for the Twitter product is theoretically and practically destroying what was great about Twitter.
    1. His dogmatic approach to free speech is resulting in a wave of hate speech underming any semblance of reasonable discourse on the platform.
    2. The pay to play model for verification ($8 for blue check) is actually undermining 1 above as the newly introduced Twitter algorithm will promote "verified" accounts to the top of your Twitter stream while suppressing the "unverified" accounts further down.
  2. Musk's business strategy is unethical.
    1. Demanding employees "lick his boot" with seemingly zero input/oversite from internal committees.
    2. Cutting headcount because his failing product model in 1 above is resulting in negative future cash flow estimates.
    3. Leveraging employees from Tesla to support with Twitter.
    4. Leveraging Tesla/SpaceX equity to bolster the failing business of Twitter (keep in mind Tesla and SpaceX receive funding from the govt so he is indirectly using our tax money to pad his failure).

Given these concerns, it is reasonable for a person to simply not want to engage with Twitter especially because the value of Twitter is the content the individual user provides to it.

edit: oh, one other major thing, Musk is a manchild rightwing memer who a lot of people find despicable on surface level actions alone. As such, simply not wanting to associate with that shit stain is sufficient for many.

sy33d_am33r_ali t1_iwwq2hr wrote

My understanding is that he is asking employees to sign some kind of loyalty pledge to keep their jobs, which includes commitments like “working longer hours and overtime at a high intensity” and not working from home.

I would probably quit my job if my new boss casually demanded that I double my workload and abandon any pretense of work-life balance as well.

It’s not hard to understand why people aren’t into this.

Then again, fuck twitter. It’s not like they were good for the world before Musk either. May he run them into the ground and lose all the money he spent!

RagnarDaViking t1_iwzivh1 wrote

Bywater t1_iwx8h4y wrote

We are pretty sure it's his only redeeming feature...

1

Bywater t1_iwx8pgn wrote

I suspect the vast majority is due to the fact that Musk continues to remove any doubt about what a garbage human being he is. There were times when those things didn't matter, but not anymore. People, particularly young folks, will happily go without something if they thing the people who own it are shitty.

2

speeb OP t1_iww9dxw wrote

Personally, my Twitter use dropped off a lot the past couple of years. It was getting to be exhausting and more and more negative. Elon pushed me to find something else.

With Mastodon, I'm hoping to find something like the BBSes of olden times - a group of users free to converse either with the users of their own board or checking out the networked message boards.

[deleted] t1_iww9svs wrote

Fair enough

3

speeb OP t1_iwwbccu wrote

Oh, but also, fuck that guy and how he's treating both the users and employees.

8

anode_cathode t1_iwwfrc1 wrote

Well, 90% of the employees are gone, some core teams are down to 0 employees, and no one can honestly tell you what his plans are for the site. He doesn't even seem to know what his plans are for the site. Twitter may not even be able to function in the near future. Most people I know are just hedging their bets at this point, especially folks who use it for commerce.

3

Antnee83 t1_iwx2vm9 wrote

I'll answer your question in good faith. Completely leaving out how Elon is a douche, and pretending like I have no idea who he is:

  • Fired and forced out a shitload of staff in charge of security. Why would I want to hang out on a site that has no one at the wheel?

  • Is allowing racists to come have a platform again. Don't wanna drink at the Nazi bar, sorry

  • See point 1: since no one is at the wheel, the site crashes all the time now. Go look at the downdetector chart for the last few days. Why would I want to fuck with a site that's never up?

That's just the big three.

1

[deleted] t1_iwx5ma1 wrote

Well people weren’t up in arms about Twitter for having Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Twitter for being a violent dictator? But now some nazi profiles are showing up it’s Musks fault? No one ever blamed Jack Dorsey for allowing Ali on Twitter. Seems like just bs media propaganda and gas lighting about Musk. I guess some people get passes and others take the blame. Pretty hypocritical if you ask me and selective outrage

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg is downsizing and FIRING Facebook employees and hardly a word has been spoken on that subject.
