Does anyone else think that the Portland press herald did a piss poor job putting together a thanksgiving paper? It used to be super thick with hours of sifting through the Black Friday deals. I read some articles, went through the ads and did the Sudoko in under an hour. Wasn’t worth the normal price of a newspaper, never mind the inflated thanksgiving price in my opinion. What do you all think?

Was that the paper or the advertisers? I would think so many retail businesses have websites that can be quite costly that print advertising isn't bringing in enough business to justify the expense any more.

I guarantee that’s part of the reason. Too much value in social ads these days. That, and a push back into radio advertising. I’ve seen the shift with the businesses I deal with in other states. I imagine it’s no different here.

Maybe you don't get newspapers often but newspapers in general are smaller. I used to work for a small newspaper in Maine. When I first started working there in 2008 it was summertime and the paper in total was 5 sections and more than 60 pages.

I left that job about 5 years later, also in the summer, and we were down to 2 sections and under 20 pages.

Newpapers don't have the money to be as big as they used to. They rely on advertisers, but not many companies are running ads anymore.

Welcome to 2022. Its been this way for a while.

The lack of ads affect so many people. My neighbor was laid off from his job at a printing company because flyers are going away slowly . He’s been in the business 40 years . Another skill lost to technology

Our home copy either wasn't delivered or was stolen. Happens every Thanksgiving.

Did they have an online version of the paper that was potentially more robust?

Since newspaper companies have slowly been switching to digital only and trying to get away from printing them… I’m not surprised?
