Looks rabbit to me but hard to tell for sure without anything to put it to scale. Could also be grey squirrel, they make a similar pattern of hind feet to front feet.

While u r right about the pattern. if u look at the prints where the hind feet made a mark, u will notice that they are long prints. Squirrels normally dont leave long prints like that.

True. Now, the true question is, was it a New England cottontail or a snowshoe hare? My guess is hare just because they are far more common.

Yup, Maine is the northern range of the New England cottontail, but we predominantly have the snowshoe hare which isn’t even a true rabbit.
