We use height, but that makes it a problem for wife to refill. One also spent weeks learning to jump higher. They are more skilled and talented than us.

We have a great one that has a spring loaded perch that drops and seals the access based on weight. Birds up to the size of Blue Jays are not a problem. Squirrel? Shuts them out immediately.

It’s important to place these types of feeders far enough away from areas where they can jump off from. They can jump pretty far vertically and horizontally. I swear it takes an area ten feet away from anything and hanging in midair to truly foil these fuckers.
