So in my family it's traditional for us to have Chinese takeout on New Years Eve. Supposedly it started with my father's parents, but my mother's family never did it. So it would seem to be a family thing, except for the fact that every Chinese restaurant in the area is always swamped on New Years Eve, to the point that they won't take any more orders after like 5:30 PM. So it's apparently a widespread tradition, but I have no idea how widespread. So I wanna know where you live/grew up, and if you consider having Chinese food on New Years Eve as a tradition.

Former Lynner here. Kowloon's was definitely the place to be. Perfect for any occasion.

That’s super common, it’s definitely not just a thing with your family.
That’s like saying “putting a tree up in our house and decorating it in December” is a family tradition (I’m exaggerating a bit, but Chinese food at new years is wicked common).

Yes, Chinese for New Year's! The reason is that it's good luck, especially noodles, which ensure long life. Originally from the Midwest, now in Portland. Happy New Year!

This except the traditions and superstitions are meant for Lunar New year, and have just been copied by westerners.

It's common with Christmas, not surprised it's common for New Year's too.

Always try to get it on NYE. I called to order at 330 today, anticipating I’d pick it up at 4 and just heat it up later. I couldn’t even pick it up until 7. It was pandemonium.

Yep, we always did this growing up. I didn’t carry it forward though. I think Americanized Chinese food is highly overrated and would rather make something special at home. But hey, one fewer body for you to contend with!

We tried the Lucky Dragon in Quincy, Mass. south Hancock street for takeout Christmas Eve. First time and liked it. Brought a sack with us back up to Maine.

Grew up on North Shore of Boston. Definitely a tradition. Many restaurants had "special" menus for NYE. Generally that meant you were paying higher prices for the same stuff! Kowloon's in Saugus was the place to be.
