Just a clarification of terms:

This list uses the federal “Combined Statistical Area” which encompasses 4 counties. It’s not just “Portland” - it’s the majority of the most populated areas of the state - 600,000 people live in this CSA.

> A larger combined statistical area (CSA), the Portland–Lewiston–South Portland combined statistical area, is defined as the combination of this metropolitan statistical area (MSA) with the adjacent Lewiston–Auburn MSA. The CSA comprises four counties in southern Maine.

https://www.citypopulation.de/en/usa/combmetro/438__portland_lewiston_sou/

The area includes:

Androscoggin county

Cumberland county

Sagadahoc county

York county

Lewiston - Auburn metropolitan statistical area

Portland - South Portland metropolitan statistical area

Not surprising. This is a CSA so it includes all of York County, Sebago Lake area, etc.

I would be curious how many 2nd homes are owned by Mainers as Camps

Quite a few from the people I know of around my area.

I like how Lewiston made the list. Yeah…we gotta summer place on Canal St. It’s pretty sweet.

And homelessness here is a record high.. and continuing to grow.

I don’t think it’s growing because people own second homes. There’s some other factors involved.

Myrtle Beach is number 4? It’s such a craphole I don’t know why anyone likes it.

Yeah, I find the whole thing questionable. NO ONE wants a second home in Barre, Vermont.

PGids t1_j5lttjn wrote

What’s Barre’s relation to the ski resorts in VT?

I’m assuming the bigger ones are set up like the Loaf with condos a plenty; which would make the numbers make a little more sense

Barre has zero relation to ski resorts. That's why it doesn't make sense.

Does this mean the area in question is the place that houses the second home or the primary residence of someone that owns a second home elsewhere?

The second home of someone whose primary/legal residence is elsewhere. It doesn't appear to differentiate between someone that for examples lives in Cumberland and also has a place in Naples vs. someone from Massachusetts that has a camp on (ugh) Sabattus Lake.

Great, I was just about to file my taxes and now you tell me I have a second home?! This is really gonna screw me.

Are people really surprised about this? It's not a new phenomenon. People have been summering in Maine for over 100 years. Second Maine summer homes are not the cause of the housing issue? Sorry are locals buying the 2 million dollar ocean front estates? I don't think so. I'm as mad about housing as anyone but this isn't the problem.

According to the source, 10.62% of homes in the Portland area are used for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use.

I'm surprised there are so many listings for PA in areas that are low in population but high in the number of state parks/gamelands. Why is there not a similar area for hunting/lake cabins in Maine?

International_Slip85 t1_j5lryei wrote

I’d imagine the populations within a 3-6 hour drive from PA is way higher so it makes sense.

This is why I mock the hell out of YIMBYs. No im not calling for building to stop, but Portland has more units and yet a stagnate population. Cali also pushed upzoning and literally has less people now.

Building market rate housing alone changes very little for regular or poor income folks
