Work at home jobs?

Hi there, so I recently gained custody of my 10 year old son part time. I work one job overnight right now on the weekends only. I am wondering if there are any work at homes that are actually legit. (Got scammed on one of them) I'm having a hard time finding a job with moms hours and we really need some more income. Planning to get a computer from rent a center so I can do it. I'm getting desperate. I am winning to do really anything. Thank you in advance.

Rent a center is a scam. Avoid it if you have any other options.

I can't speak to RAC but I managed an Aaron's location for a while and it's horrendous how much debt customers go into for items.

We would sell them items between 200% to 1000% over MSRP. It would start as an emergency and then the company did everything to upsell them or trap them in the system. They'd also hold contests to award customers who had the most items and the highest payments. Fucking. There was a payday advance loan place in our parking lot. We spent so much time doing collections.

They'd also have us talk to customers about how our payments are monthly vs weekly or x% or customers more get to ownership over RAC customers. Like cool there's less fees and more people get to owning a hyper inflated item?

They also are almost certainly straight up bullshitting customers with the "rebuild credit" lie. Only reporting to 1 agency.

Avoid them like the plague like this guy says. If they're like Aaron's they abuse customers and employees alike and suck people dry. If you can try to find alternatives on fb marketplace or maybe from friends and family.

I unfortunately provided a reference for someone for RAC. When this person fell behind on the payments RAC was calling me to find out what was going on. Like, fuck off and never call me again!

Oh. Yeah. I believe you. We'd do that with like the first few hours at Aaron's every day and an hour or so after the store closed. It'd eventually devolve to a point where notice would be served by the cops. But prior to that we'd call anyone and everyone including employers. They're mega scummy.

Going to need a bit more information here. Do you have any formal education post high school? What kind of jobs have you worked in the past (experience-wise)? What are "mom's hours"? Also, please never set foot in a rent-a-center. Their entire business model is way overcharging people who are most in need. Check Craigslist/FB marketplace/Uncle henrys for cheap used laptops or maybe even give your library a call. They often have loaner computers for students but if you explain your situation they may be sympathetic enough to let you use it until you can afford your own.

Like someone else said - steer clear of Rent a center. You’re going to be paying more in the long run. Look at Best Buy or Walmart or a big box store — often they offer 0% interest with credit card over a certain month. Just budget and pay it off before the promo term is up (and it’ll still probably be cheaper than RAC). As far as at-home work, I feel LL Bean has call center positions you can do from home (plus bonus: you’d get access to the employee store for cheap clothes/gear). Best of luck.

Two things: Stay away from RAC, like many have already said. And, find the job first and let them know you'll get the equipment they require before you start. Some companies will provide a laptop, others might only require a chromebook with a good internet connection. You can get a new chromebook for $100. Best of luck to you!!

Look around on Facebook for the local buy nothing groups, or even the free section on marketplace. I’ve seen many decent computers/laptops be given away.

With just a GED and limited hours I think remote will be hard to find. If you can be more flexible on your hours call center work is often remote now and will take anyone.

Hunter Douglas a big blind company does all their CS remote and they pay decently. Have some friends working there

From what my niece tells me there is always a need for insurance adjusters who WFH. It’s not glamorous and you hear everyone’s problems but it wasn’t hard to get qualified and the pay was ok. She went on to something else after a few years.

Staples has an HP laptop for $300. Way better than rent a center. Some people have older computers laying around, check marketplace. But then ask someone if this is ok. Don’t get taken.

Maine allows school districts to set their own requirements for substitute teachers. The state only requires that a substitute have a high school diploma or GED and undergo a background check and fingerprinting.

Schools throughout Maine are desperate for substitute teachers.

And if you’re not interested in subbing, maybe try food service or custodial. There are LOTS of mothers hours jobs in school districts.

Short term, look for something online. There are some good resources here.

Longer term, see if you can get a PEL grant to get some College (I suggest the community colleges, they do offer online classes) this will help you out in the future.

You would need a decent level of computer literacy - typing, setting up mics/camera, using spreadsheets, etc.

Pretty common tasks can be incredibly unintuitive on a PC. I dunno how many times I've wanted to bash my head against the wall using Excel or Outlook.

Would you have any industry specific knowledge that would lend to a remote job? For example if you were a previously a mechanic you could potentially do remote parts sales.

Ultimately I recommend enrolling in SMCC and getting an Associates in something. The Pell Grant and loans will float you, then also do-it-to-it and upskill - even beyond your program/curriculum.

step one... learn autocad or some other cad/engineering design software.

step two... find an architects firm who needs someone to make changes to plans for them.

my old high school buddy who's an architect in florida says people pay over 100k a year to people to modify cad drawings for them on short notice/quick turn around.
