I know it’s not pitch black at 3pm and that you can see fine. But having your lights on when it’s dusk, and drizzly and grey, makes you a lot easier to see.

I removed my wipers just so I don’t need headlights
not the hero we needed but the hero we deserved.
Nailed it.
I only use my wipers intermittently so I don’t need head lights either.
Incorrect. You need intermittent headlights.
Correct. Your lights must be on whenever your wipers are. So you'll have to take both hands off the wheel to grab both shafts(gigitty). I think the lights are more or less an indicator for wipers.
I’m not a lawyer but the legislation says: Lights must be on when wipers are in constant use
IMO this would mean: using your wipers a few times just to clean washer fluid off the windshield? Not turning the lights on.
Using them once a minute in a light drizzle? Turn them on.
Perhaps there is some leeway in defining “constant” but the law also mentions decreased visibility in addition to constant wiper use.
> §2067. Lights
>1. Display of headlights. A vehicle located on a way must be equipped with headlights as described in section 1904. The headlights must be illuminated:
>A. During the period from sunset to sunrise; [PL 2015, c. 51, §1 (AMD).]
>B. At any time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, including, but not limited to, rain, freezing rain, fog or snow, persons or vehicles on the way are not discernible for a distance of 1,000 feet ahead; and [PL 1997, c. 249, §1 (NEW).]
>C. At any time when windshield wipers are in constant use. [PL 1997, c. 249, §1 (NEW).]
I only use my wipers when parked to avoid tickets.
I never understood why turning on the wipers doesn't automatically turn on the headlights.
My 96 Cadillac does this and it’s 27 year old technology. Car manufactures are just plain cheap and greedy if that makes sense
Thanks OP. I saw this post, ran out of my house to my car and flipped them on. Now my battery is dead.
You’re supposed to leave your car running so that doesn’t happen!!
Now I'm outta gas, AND my battery is dead!
skill issue
It also accelerated climate change. Wtf. I knew it was weird it's been like 50.
How about can you turn your high beams off. I've never been blinded by high beams more than recently.
Deal!
But seriously, headlights are so bright these days that I’m blinded even if high beams aren’t on.
Headlights and brights these days are so bad that they will give you a nice tan.
Doesn't sound at all bad then!
Me too. Coworker said this morning that a lot of oncoming cars have been flashing him - thinking he has high beams on. He THEN says that he recently swapped out his 800w headlamps for 1800w.
And probably has never checked the aim…
You mean 80 watts for 180? No way their car battery can handle that load
Yea, probably.
They install new headlights but never check to if their aligned properly 😕
I have a new truck purchased from a dealer with no modifications and I get people occasionally flash me to turn my low beams on. The new headlights are just bright af people don't need to do anything.
You only need to aim headlights with the old style reflector headlights. Most cars nowadays have projector style headlights and don’t need to aim them.
It might not be high beams. Some of the new headlights are just plain obnoxious. I forgot what they are called.
Edit to add: Halogen Lights and Fog Lights
It's ridiculous, the other day I turned my high-beams on at an oncoming car who I thought had their high-beams on. The oncoming car turned their high-beams on and there was no difference.
If you need low-beams that bright to drive then you shouldn't be driving at night.
Exactly. I got some nasty comments and a bunch of down-votes for saying that.
LED headlights blind me almost as much as high beams do. Humans get distracted by that degree of white light, it’s obnoxious and dangerous.
Yes. Is it LED that is so bright? Or Halogen? I don't know. We can do better.
No most of the time its high beams because I turn mine on and they turn theirs off.
Personal opinion: If you have LED headlights go fuck yourself.
So people should stop buying new vehicles? They seem to come standard now.
Or you know, get them properly aligned and actually turn off your high beams when people are passing you, both things that most LED headlight users don't do.
I have LED headlights on both of the vehicles in our family. They were purchased this way. Soooo you can go fuck yourself how about that?
Ok
Tell that to the car manufactures not the drivers dickhead. Most newer cars are LED standards. Have fun with your dim halogen headlights trying to see on the back roads.
"How dare this guy insult my headlights! I had better insult this plebian's inferior headlights! That'll show him!"
I got a good laugh out of that one.
You’re weird dude
Just paraphrasing your comment.
Well calling people dickheads who have LED headlights even though new cars have them as standard equipment I’m going to give you shit about your attitude.
Hey, you're the one who seemed to take it weirdly personally that I indirectly insulted your headlights of all things, and also tried to make fun of my headlights as if they don't work at night in some sort of weird flex about your LED headlights.
I'm seeing a total disrespect for most traffic laws. Mostly idiots in big pickups
Tbh a lot of that is just led lights on cars
During the day time too.... like what?????
Eye care doctors go home to a house full of green every single night, laughing their asses off...
"So which sorry sucker needs glasses next?!"
Yep. The lights at that hour are not for you to see. It is for that guy over there to see you!
I know from experience.
Also, actually turn your lights on, not just DRL. Having your rear lights on might prevent you getting rear ended.
Please don't hit me southernbutterbean!
I've not hit anyone yet!
On the topic of headlights (yes please use them) - there's a special place in hell for you halogen wielding psychopaths.
(edit: whoops meant aftermarket LED "asshole I can see everything and don't care if I blind you especially if you're one of the many who has astigmatism and will send you into a giant bright blinding halo" headlights
It’s the LED lights that are the brightest.
HIDs can be bad too
yeah a newer mechanic friend of mine said the newer halogens are nasty, idk anymore
Yes fair enough, I just use my stock ones and can see 100% so accidentally made a boo boo post but my point got across
Just an FYI there bud, halogens are the old style that have been in use for 60+ years.
Fair enough, I stand corrected. Halogen just sounds brighter
And clean the snow off your vehicles!!!
Snow? You must be inland. I’ve forgotten the stuff exists.
How far inland? Central Maine and well, there's something out there right now but I'd be hard pressed to call it snow
What is this "s n o w" you speak of?
*Coastal Southern Mainer
Soooo many people not turning on their lights! This is not something new, come on folks!

Yeah, I don't intend to ever get back in a car again either.
3pm? Pfft you still can't get these drivers to have them on at 7pm
Unfortunately I have daytime running lights that stay on. But TURNING THE FOG LIGHTS off would be the next step. They are low position high beams to me and when the roads are wet I can't see with my astigmatism
Always keep my auto lights on though because I remember being told when the sun isn't visible you need lights on for safety reasons
I was told in drivers Ed that it’s best practice to always have headlights on as it gives other drivers a better perception of your speed, helping them determine that it’s not a good time to pull into the road in front of you
Instructions unclear; car on fire.
All vehicles should have daytime running lights! Not just GM.
Mine has amber running lights in the front. Not as good as true running lights but better than nothing I suppose (I drive with my headlights on during daylight 80% of the time anyways and 100% of the time as soon as it’s even cloudy out)
Good idea👍
If you have LED headlights, you can leave them off, the sun is blinding enough.
I get where people are coming from with turning your lights on for safety, but so many cars these days have low beam headlights that are ridiculously brighter than what we're all used to high beams being like.
Also, if you have an off-road light bar and you're using it on the road, I hope you miss the low bridge sign and that thing gets obliterated.
I’ve got a light bar but I ALWAYS turn it off around others, whether oncoming or same direction as me, or even waiting at a stop sign. Its also mounted on my bumper so it’s not the first thing one would see as I come over a hill, and I turn it off as soon as I see reflections of other cars’ headlights on the power lines. Even if the other car isn’t in view yet
I see plenty of cars even after full dark with no lights on. They think they are because the dash lights are. But that doesn't help others see you. And many cars still don't have auto on lights or daytime runnig lights.
Nothing unites the cranky jerks in Maine like a car-related thread.
And also stop driving with your fking high beams on all of the god damned time. That shit is obnoxious and dangerous. Idk why that's seemingly so difficult for New Englanders to not do.
And really, how many headlights does your truck need?
Ok. Sorry
Most cars have an auto setting on headlights so they turn on if it’s grey
I'd rather have people keep their headlights off. I can see you and I'd rather not be blinded.
It's like I told my last wife, I says: "Honey, I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it's all in the reflexes"
-Jack Burton
not sure if people are aware, but most newer-ish vehicles have a "auto" function on the stick that controls your headlights. Once you set it on auto, you never have to touch it again.
My wife’s car sometime won’t turn on the lights when I think they should be on. And often when it’s drizzly I will just bump the wipers when I need them because the slowest setting is too fast, which does not turn the headlights on.
Gotta love my fellow Mainers for having all the time in the world to make public service requests about turning headlights on... On Reddit. Yes Karen. I'll turn my headlights on. Thank you for your service.
Wasting time complaining about people on Reddit wasting time complaining about things on Reddit.
I’d like to add, please PULL UP TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU AT RED LIGHTS! I don’t know why people started doing this but there’s legit whole car lengths between people at stoplights now. So dumb.
What’s a stop light?
My theory is that all of the backlit/digital dashboards in cars these days make people clueless as to when headlights are needed. I See so many people driving around without lights on now - or just DRL’s, which don’t do anything for the rest of the vehicle… (whatever happened to those, anyhow?). They could easily put a photo sensor on a vehicle - that would solve the problem.
IMO the automatic headlights design is a flaw. If the DRL’s are activated at half strength the tail lights should do the same. Most people don’t realize their DRLs only work for the front and not the rear. Common sense isn’t common
This sub is just sad. Should be renamed r/whinging.
You are the expert.
Gay
FYI - Nextdoor.com was created for complaints like this.
With the push for electric vehicles everyone will be using their lights at the last second possible to conserve their battery life! Another plus to the awesome ELECTRIC VEHICLE
I love these stupid takes on EVs.
Modern headlights draw what 35w? So 70w for the pair. EV sedans use ~250wh/mile. So you would have to run the head lights for 3.5 hours to burn one mile of range.
You have a point but nothing will make me buy a EV until they solve this cobalt-mining child labor problem.
Ahh, yes, so much more harmful than the wars that have been fought and are still fought over oil, deaths of (very conservatively) tens of thousands of women and children. Not to mention the detrimental health effects of smog which has shortened the life of millions and millions of people.
Yes, no one like child labor, but it’s such a whataboutism excuse for not liking EVs. If you don’t like EVs that’s fine, they aren’t for everyone, they don’t fit every use case, but to act like they aren’t an improvement for society and the environment is just ridiculous and wrong.
It's just because that one tough guy at work, who totally probably has a bigger dick than him, makes fun of EVs, so now he has no choice but to incorporate that into his identity so his testicles don't retreat into his body whenever that tough guy is around.
Lol, he is cucktroll
Oil in many countries also relies on slave and child labor. Just so you know, since it seems to be something you're worried about. Also, much of the clothing you buy. And your cell phone. And should I go on?
And no, of course that shouldn't be tolerated. But being so SELECTIVE in how you get angry about it seems weird and suggests you're reasoning isn't "child labor" issues but something else.
Too much TV

Using your headlights at the last possible second is not a plus no matter what kind of car you drive. It's a negative. It's sheer stupidity. You might as well sign a death warrant and put out a last will and testament every time you sit in your car and go driving.
(Yes, I'm aware of the sarcasm, but it needs to be said anyway. A lot of stupid people about.)
why does this give off trump tweet energy

Also it’s the law to have them on when wipers are on.
