How about can you turn your high beams off. I've never been blinded by high beams more than recently.

Also, actually turn your lights on, not just DRL. Having your rear lights on might prevent you getting rear ended.

Thanks OP. I saw this post, ran out of my house to my car and flipped them on. Now my battery is dead.

Unfortunately I have daytime running lights that stay on. But TURNING THE FOG LIGHTS off would be the next step. They are low position high beams to me and when the roads are wet I can't see with my astigmatism

(edit: whoops meant aftermarket LED "asshole I can see everything and don't care if I blind you especially if you're one of the many who has astigmatism and will send you into a giant bright blinding halo" headlights

Ahh, yes, so much more harmful than the wars that have been fought and are still fought over oil, deaths of (very conservatively) tens of thousands of women and children. Not to mention the detrimental health effects of smog which has shortened the life of millions and millions of people.

Yes, no one like child labor, but it’s such a whataboutism excuse for not liking EVs. If you don’t like EVs that’s fine, they aren’t for everyone, they don’t fit every use case, but to act like they aren’t an improvement for society and the environment is just ridiculous and wrong.

Using your headlights at the last possible second is not a plus no matter what kind of car you drive. It's a negative. It's sheer stupidity. You might as well sign a death warrant and put out a last will and testament every time you sit in your car and go driving.

(Yes, I'm aware of the sarcasm, but it needs to be said anyway. A lot of stupid people about.)

Oil in many countries also relies on slave and child labor. Just so you know, since it seems to be something you're worried about. Also, much of the clothing you buy. And your cell phone. And should I go on?

And no, of course that shouldn't be tolerated. But being so SELECTIVE in how you get angry about it seems weird and suggests you're reasoning isn't "child labor" issues but something else.

GoblinShark603 t1_j36jbq4 wrote

Correct. Your lights must be on whenever your wipers are. So you'll have to take both hands off the wheel to grab both shafts(gigitty). I think the lights are more or less an indicator for wipers.

Cutlasss t1_j36nzpf wrote

I see plenty of cars even after full dark with no lights on. They think they are because the dash lights are. But that doesn't help others see you. And many cars still don't have auto on lights or daytime runnig lights.

It's just because that one tough guy at work, who totally probably has a bigger dick than him, makes fun of EVs, so now he has no choice but to incorporate that into his identity so his testicles don't retreat into his body whenever that tough guy is around.

It's ridiculous, the other day I turned my high-beams on at an oncoming car who I thought had their high-beams on. The oncoming car turned their high-beams on and there was no difference.

If you need low-beams that bright to drive then you shouldn't be driving at night.

If you have LED headlights, you can leave them off, the sun is blinding enough.

I get where people are coming from with turning your lights on for safety, but so many cars these days have low beam headlights that are ridiculously brighter than what we're all used to high beams being like.

Also, if you have an off-road light bar and you're using it on the road, I hope you miss the low bridge sign and that thing gets obliterated.

Emolokz t1_j370inr wrote

And also stop driving with your fking high beams on all of the god damned time. That shit is obnoxious and dangerous. Idk why that's seemingly so difficult for New Englanders to not do.

Mine has amber running lights in the front. Not as good as true running lights but better than nothing I suppose (I drive with my headlights on during daylight 80% of the time anyways and 100% of the time as soon as it’s even cloudy out)

Hefty_Musician2402 t1_j371f3w wrote

I was told in drivers Ed that it’s best practice to always have headlights on as it gives other drivers a better perception of your speed, helping them determine that it’s not a good time to pull into the road in front of you

3

Hefty_Musician2402 t1_j371pyt wrote

I’ve got a light bar but I ALWAYS turn it off around others, whether oncoming or same direction as me, or even waiting at a stop sign. Its also mounted on my bumper so it’s not the first thing one would see as I come over a hill, and I turn it off as soon as I see reflections of other cars’ headlights on the power lines. Even if the other car isn’t in view yet

glop1701 t1_j372hue wrote

not sure if people are aware, but most newer-ish vehicles have a "auto" function on the stick that controls your headlights. Once you set it on auto, you never have to touch it again.

lobster_man_207 OP t1_j37hk93 wrote

My wife’s car sometime won’t turn on the lights when I think they should be on. And often when it’s drizzly I will just bump the wipers when I need them because the slowest setting is too fast, which does not turn the headlights on.

My theory is that all of the backlit/digital dashboards in cars these days make people clueless as to when headlights are needed. I See so many people driving around without lights on now - or just DRL’s, which don’t do anything for the rest of the vehicle… (whatever happened to those, anyhow?). They could easily put a photo sensor on a vehicle - that would solve the problem.

1

Notmystationbro t1_j3dk91i wrote

IMO the automatic headlights design is a flaw. If the DRL’s are activated at half strength the tail lights should do the same. Most people don’t realize their DRLs only work for the front and not the rear. Common sense isn’t common

20thMaine t1_j3eztju wrote

I’m not a lawyer but the legislation says: Lights must be on when wipers are in constant use

IMO this would mean: using your wipers a few times just to clean washer fluid off the windshield? Not turning the lights on.

Using them once a minute in a light drizzle? Turn them on.

Perhaps there is some leeway in defining “constant” but the law also mentions decreased visibility in addition to constant wiper use.

>B. At any time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, including, but not limited to, rain, freezing rain, fog or snow, persons or vehicles on the way are not discernible for a distance of 1,000 feet ahead; and [PL 1997, c. 249, §1 (NEW).]
