Compared to who?

Why does it matter if we’re doing better or worse than others? Wouldn’t you be more interested in living up to your own ideals?

I’m not OP, but personally I’d like to see us do a better job of taking care of those experiencing homelessness, mental illness, etc regardless of how anyone else is doing it. I’d personally like to see my community doing a lot more than we do.

The op made it sound like this was an especially bad problem in Maine and I wanted to know why they thought that. Not saying we can't do better.

OP- Sees some negative comments online about a musician they don’t even listen to and rushes onto Reddit to complain about the residents of an entire State.

C’mon man, this is embarrassing.

Why only specifically mainers would do this? Seems like you generalized all of mainers to di this behavior.

Sadly, I've seen it. There's a stigma with mental illness that needs to die out. Too many people see it as a defect or weakness or shameful, which translates into not knowing how to be a good friend/family member.

We need to end the stigma and educate.

ETA: Wow, look at the downvotes rolling in for .... calling out the bullshit? If you downvoted this, you're probably part of the problem. Do better.

Probably has a lot to do with some pseudo-Puritanical ideal of independence combined with years and years of family trauma and psychological abuse.

Or the people that you associate with.

I don't know of a single person that doesn't support the mental health of their friends.

A very popular local Portland musician is currently having a very public meltdown and nobody is supporting her at all. I’m happy for you that you have a healthy group of friends, but it’s sad to see people have public meltdowns and everybody’s advice is to turn away. I’m not talking about my friends. I’m talking about stuff I see happening in the community.

I suspect that help and support is being offered but the person in question is unable or unwilling to accept help. I have seen it many times. And I have personal experience with such situations.

How would you know who is supporting her? You’re making a lot of assumptions with this thread and your comments.

This is one anecdotal situation. I certainly wouldn't characterize Mainers as not supporting their mentally ill friends based on this.

I reach out to popular musicians having meltdowns. Kanye has yet to respond...

But seriously, why would a public figure, even a "locally public figure," be accepting help from "fans?" You might be overestimating your personal connection.

You’re right, I totally might be. In this case, I’m not. But it’s true that I might have been.

Can you send me more information? I'm not in Portland but perhaps I can help share some resources
