I think Gardiner has more of what you're looking for, but Lisbon, specifically, Lisbon Falls, is getting there.

Thanks! I kinda loved Gardiner, and what it's trying to be, when I visited a few months ago. But I've read articles talking about Lisbon's revival, and it's closer to Portland and all the things, so that's what makes it a contender for me. Good to get feedback from people who know the areas.

I would put my vote in for Gardiner. It seems to have more going on and a nice little downtown. A handful of independent eateries to. Lisbon is ok has a few really nice restaurants, 1 chef earning a james beard nomination but no real downtown to speak of. Look into Brunswick area as well. Lots of everything close by, young vibe with Bowdoin college. Easy travel with 295, and route 1 for coastal. May remind you more of your current location. Just my opinion, good luck.

I'm not sure either one is particularly "artsy" or "cultural" but they're both plausible choices based on what you've said. Go take a look.
