It's not the tools who made the artist, but the artist itself. A tool only help you.

You are not going to be the next Federer by buying the same racket brand and model he uses, if you don't have any tennis training.

But a nicer tool make a job more enjoyable and may turn someone more productive, that's true.

No need to thank me, just be strong and don't be afraid to ask for help or have a talk with someone.

Losing someone dear is a hard hurdle to overcome, so anything positive will help us to get back onto our feet, even if it is just a "you can talk, I'm happy to listen to you".

I truly think he grew up typing on horrible typewriters so to him this keyboard was amazing.

This layout makes sense if you have limited horizontal desk space, but still want all the conveniences of a full-size keyboard. Very interesting.

Sorry for your lost. I understand the feeling lost my dad in 2017.

I guess he got comfortable with that keyboard

23

KaikuAika t1_j8vy6j6 wrote

Honestly I kinda like it. I would also work for gamers since numpad and nav cluster are moved to the top to make room for the mouse next to the keyboard. If you don't like it, send it to Chyrosran22 (he's a youtuber and reviews strange vintage keyboards)

SyndaXatrix t1_j8wepkn wrote

I'll be honest, if someone came to me with that with the switches swapped to a tactile that I liked, I'd be pretty down for that form factor.

Nathaniel___B t1_j8v9dfc wrote

That probably has Cherry MY or ML 🤢🤢

3

BoobsMcGeek OP t1_j8vaxly wrote

it feels more like rubber domes in hell.

6

Nathaniel___B t1_j8vezfc wrote

That's exactly what Cherry MY and ML are, except they are somehow fully mechanical by some ungodly ways.

type_ace t1_j8vz17j wrote

I think it looks pretty cool! Would be even better if they moved that numpad to the left, but then again, your wrist would probably rest on the alphas....

Oh and I don't really know if this is all recent but I'm sorry for your loss.

Kirball904 t1_j8x8k3z wrote

That’s actually a pretty cool layout. May be a terrible type feel but I’d love to own something in that layout for the collection. Of course with modern switches and a nice case.

The CargoVan!

Kirball904 t1_j8y1vh2 wrote

Wait, this exists?

_11tee12_ t1_j96vfp0 wrote

haha yep! The unit in the OP is one of many sub-models of the interesting **Datalux SpaceSaver keyboards from the late-80's & early-90's.

This one posted here was called a "Desk model"; which featured that unique ergonomic ramped-backplane, but there were also flat variants in the "Desk" & "Panel" sub-model categories. All versions came with either Cherry ML or MEI low-profile MX-mount switches, and these boards ALSO had options which replaced that middle Nav Cluster with a Pinnacle Cirque Trackpad module! 👀

Anyway, yeah - naturally a Geekhacker named mrbishop came along who loved the layout & general vibe of the OG SpaceSaver and gave it a modern-reboot in the form of a handwired teensy++ built into a neat stacked aluminum, wood & acrylic case and called it the DataLuxxx. Mrbishop's Dataluxxx progress-thread was followed closely by Evan from TheVanKeyboards/TVK, who loved it so much he also made a 40% version that replaced the main keyboard section with a Minivan layout: THIS was dubbed **CargoVan.

There was also another, even more-recent revival of the CargoVan on the 40% Keyboards discord server by GlowKB, who mocked up a fresh PCB & a chonky CNC'd aluminum case for a small semi-private buy last year!

Kirball904 t1_j9709eg wrote

Nice thanks for the history lesson. :). Would love an alu reboot in a 60-75% width but I have too many projects to attempt this myself :(

2

BoobsMcGeek OP t1_j8yxtvb wrote

I agree I love the aesthetic, but with maybe a few multi-function knobs, usb3c, Some clicky blue switches. I'd buy it!

I’m not a big rotary encoder fan and I am an avid clicky hater. But to each their own :)

Natorior t1_j8xdn9c wrote

I would be pretty cool to mod this, however it would be difficult as the switches are abnormal

That keyboard looks like my own personal hellspace, yet I am strangely intrigued by it. I’ve never seen one with this layout before and my brain is just screaming why

JDBCool t1_j8vvhzz wrote

the numb pad I can see, the F-row is weird.

the arrow key 3x3? Why.....

my brain says it should be knobs

Probably old people think a keyboard is a keyboard, no need to ever change it until it stops working.

People who do great things with tools are rarely people who care about the tool itself. There are artists, and then there are people who obsess over the tools used to create art. They are two normal distributions with only a little overlap.
