I guess if you spend enough time and money getting products from companies that make defective products and only give you 30 days, you start thinking it's normal. You purchase something and notice the defect 40 days later, you just shrug and blame yourself for not returning it earlier.

It's not difficult for a manufacturer/brand to warranty products as long as they're of high quality to begin with. Take REI for example. Any of their branded products are guaranteed for life. I bought a tent from them in 1997; practically lived out of it for a year or so. 20 years later, the zipper wasn't working very well, so I contacted them to find out how to get it fixed. They replaced the tent at no cost.

Even if it's just a reseller of other products, if they are quality products and they company cares about their customers, they can offer fantastic warranties. An example here is Sweetwater. They sell musical instruments and accessories. With very few exceptions, they will replace anything defective for up to two years. Even their used gear is guaranteed for 90 days. Think about that. It's _used_ musical equipment guaranteed for 3 months.

So the only reason I can see for only having 30 days warranty on something like a USB cable is that they are aware that their products are low quality and the only way they can stay in business is to avoid having to deal with their faulty products. When a company does this, I feel very comfortable calling it a scam.

Clearly you just dont know how retailers work…

Drop allows other companies (i.e mechcables) to sell their product on drops website, in return Drop gets a portion of the money earned from each sale.

Normally a retailer is only liable for returns in a 14 or 30 day window.

Since its been months, drop isnt liable for the quality of the product, the manufacturer is… so contact the company that made it…

I suggest changing the title of your post. Drop is just the middle man for Mechcables. Did Drop provide you any additional support or tell you to contact the manufacture?

Not sure what the warranty is on Mechcables but they are a premium cable I’m sure they will honor a repair or replacement.

This cable is faulty.

Origin of problem:
I used the cable to connect to an Ergodox EZ keyboard until it started losing connection.

Troubleshooting:

  1. I replaced this cable with a different USB cable and the keyboard started working again.
  2. I tried this cable on a brand new Keychron Q1 keyboard and it also doesn't work. (The cable that came with the keyboard works fine.)

Conclusion:
This cable is defective.

Don’t get me wrong I am not a Drop fan. I think they are out of touch with the custom keyboard community (but that’s a different topic of convo).

In this case they though if the cable is out of their return policy window they have every right to refuse a return of exchange. Do I think it’s right? HELL NO… but here are many reasons for those policies beyond just this instance.

Anyways it looks like you still have a couple of options. First reach out to Mechcables. Second respond back to poor naive Matthew at Drop, see if he can provide any additional support beyond the above mentioned. If they can’t well… unfortunately Drop has just lost another customer. Just know that you aren’t alone in that department.

Yeah. Already responded to Matthew at Drop. Since it's been 41 days, they don't care anymore. Haven't reached out to Mechcables, but their faq indicates that they don't care either.

Either way, not buying anything from either of them again.

You didn't buy from Mechcables. You bought from someone who bought from mechcables.

If you bought from mechcables, you would be having a great experience. But you didn't, you paid the middleman. So you get to deal with the middleman.

Mechcables is by far one of the best vendors in the business.

It's still their product that lasted 41 days. It's the only USB cable that has ever failed in my experience. It's also the most wildly expensive.

Their website says they only have a 30 day warranty.

I don't think I'll be buying directly from a company that made the only faulty USB cable I have ever owned.

  4. customer service that doesn't even read the issue report before responding.

I see posts here about Epomaker doing this crap, but when Drop does it, the shills come out of the woodwork to defend them.

But Drop is a vendor selling products for brands beyond just their own. I fail to see how Drop products are priced unfairly compared to similar products on the market (such as keycaps, for example).

Drop has a 30 day return window for their products. Everything they do not make themselves should be addressed by whoever made the product. I see this brought up a lot when someone receives a defective GMK set and wants to blacklist NovelKeys, Kono, etc.

I just think it's unfair to call Drop a "scam" after a cable which was not made by then stopped working months later. And with no other information provided.

Yeah, I understand how return windows work. It doesn't change the fact that they're selling faulty expensive merchandise and don't care about their customers.

I don't really see much point in contacting Mechcables. They won't give me a refund, since I bought it from Drop, not them. And I'm not really interested in getting a replacement that I don't trust not to just fail in another month or so.

Dude, a blind man can see that drop is overpriced for their products. Their whole inventory is a scam lmao. Take the Paragon Series Storm Trooper. You can build the same keyboard for like $300~ dollars. They can quite literally go to hell.

All of the keycaps I've bought have been BOGO, so that's saved me a decent amount of money. I'm happy with their quality, and feel like they stack up to other brands in their range (GMK, Signature Plastics, etc.) well. I'm a big fan of ABS keycaps and tall molds, so MT3 is really comfortable for me.

But I'm not knocking cheaper options. Whatever floats your boat!

Drop's business model is weird, to put it mildly. I ordered a keyboard from them, back in November. Nothing fancy, a Keebmonkey 1800. Estimated ship date: January 10, 2023.

Jan 10 came and went. In February, I reached out, asked for an update. No update. Asked to cancel my order. Nope, can't do it, the keyboard is being shipped. Okay. When, exactly? Couldn't tell me. The very next day, they sent an update - orders are delayed, could be as much as 30 days. 30 more days.

Today, I finally get my ship notification. 84 days from date of order. For a inexpensive barebones keyboard that (now that I look) appears to be in stock at several retail sites. 84 days from the day I paid Drop for this keyboard.

Lesson learned. Not planning to shop Drop again anytime soon, if ever.
