my school’s IT department is insane— i also took a ~$300-$500 windows 8.1 all in one touch screen pc perfectly working with an i5 and 16gb of ram

If you saved that from the trash, that’s a good deal. That’s similar specs to the system I’m running now with FreeBSD. Put in some Linux distro. You’ll be happy with it.
