I want a review of this before I consider it. Haven’t seen any…

What kind of details do you want? After this week I may do a review. But I'm just starting on the mech keyboard interest. Meaning my own review would be about open box experience, putting in different switches and caps (silent alpacas and wob cherry pbt). Comparing sounds to the K6 I bought about a month ago.

I'd probably take it apart to see what's inside and make general observations that are not as informed (or biased) as others.

SilentStream t1_jcbmzzm wrote

The biggest potential issue I'm concerned about is the sound with the integrated plate and whether it's actually a better ergonomic experience than a standard 75% layout!

davidroberts63 t1_jcbq8r6 wrote

I can speak to the layout somewhat vs a standard 75. I've been using a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic for about eight years. That's about as close to a split as I've ever had. Went to the K6 and noticed within about a day the inside of my wrists had sharp pains that go away quickly when I go back to the sculpt ergo. I anticipate a similar pain free experience with the Q11. That will be an important part that I'll mention in the review.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts to this because I've got a lot of questions:

  1. Most (if not all) of the Q series boards are gasket-mounted. Is that not the case here?
  2. How much room is there inside the keyboard for modding?
  3. The underside of the keycaps are exposed here (not sure what that's called). Is that an advantage? A disadvantage?
  4. What do you use both knobs for?
  5. Is the cord connecting the two halves long enough? Is it annoying to deal with?
  6. Is there anything special you need to do with VIA to mess with the mappings, or it it as straightforward as their other boards?
  7. How heavy is this board compared to the Q1 for example?
  8. What's the general feel of this keyboard as a split keyboard?
  9. Do you ever use only one half of the keyboard?
  10. What does your setup look like with the Q11?
  11. What are your thoughts on this being a staggered and not ortholinear layout?

Hopefully these questions aren't too late. If you do make a review would you please give a link? Thanks in advance!

I've been typing on it all day today, and I'll continue to do so tomorrow. I've written up most of my review, but I also have a college assignment due over the weekend. I'll be working on the video review alongside that effort. I hope to have something posted by this coming Monday.

It's a GMK EVA-01 clone without the hiragana sublegends. It weirdly has the same color scheme as the Joker, which is pretty cool

16

jh_2719 t1_jca2dv9 wrote

Eh, same colours? Sure. But hard to call it a clone when it's not got the sublegends and zero novelties from the GMK run. Just a budget purple and green set with better kitting than GMK imo

I just got mine 2 days ago. Replaced an old Das Keyboard. Huge improvement for me. I’m really happy with it, I got it assembled with browns. I want to swap switches to something nicer, but if you like the layout, this is amazing for the money.

Does it have magnets or something to hold it together if you choose to push the sides together?

7

Zaphoed OP t1_jcamzq2 wrote

It does not

5

x-typo t1_jcay7s5 wrote

awww. That would be so cool if its magnetized.

2

Zaphoed OP t1_jcb23gr wrote

You might be able to add a magnet but don't think it's necessary

2

x-typo t1_jcb3zm2 wrote

can do that with a hot glue. Never own a split keyboard before so I'll take your words for it :)

2

seandanger t1_jcap6o1 wrote

It doesn't, but the weight of the case plus the rubber feet on the bottom plus fitting together like a puzzle piece all keep it from moving, so I don't think you need them.

SlayerOfSpatulas t1_jdnhuku wrote

What about palm support?

Currently on a Kinesis Freestyle 2 with the palm supports that clip in and follow each half. Along with the Q11, I,m considering the Freestyle Pro with MX Browns as the palm support function in the same way.

I wasn't able to find anything similar for the Q11. I wonder if getting palm supports for the Q11 would just be too many things moving around on the desk?

how does it sound with the integrated case/plate

3

davidroberts63 t1_jdgdimd wrote

I've got mine with Silent Alpaca Linears. It's very quiet if that's what you are looking for. I can't tell if the integrated case adds or detracts from the sound as I'm not as well-versed in mechanical keyboards as others may be.

CornerGuyZ t1_jcb2erz wrote

Just f-ing beautiful. I'm eagerly waiting for mine and this post calms my soul hahahah

Btw, where did you get those keycaps? I'm looking for some custom ones for mine when it arrives, but the spacebars are a problem: very few keycap sets include caps for these space bars.

Keychron has really done a good job of making these layouts that were previously only available as customs or GBs mainstream purchases.

Looking at getting a Q9 myself but never would have waited years for a similar board to be funded/manufactured/shipped

3

Durza777 t1_jcdyedb wrote

Ever heard of Mistel? The keychron is surely nicer but mistel has had splits readily available for a while and I like mine.

Any wrist rests that you think would go well with this?

Is there a way to tilt it laterally in order to limit Ulnar deviation?

How did you get those knobs? Thought it came… uhhh… knobless?

Sorry if the questions are stupid. I’m new to this whole keyboard world.

keychron sells their own wrist rest for the keyboard on their website. Should be able to get it as an add on to the board

It would be amazing to see a review of this one!

I’m looking into split keyboards right now and basically choosing between Q11 and Dygma Raise.

Q11 is 75%, which is my favorite layout and also reasonably praised. However, it doesn’t have a thumb-cluster, which is a big missed opportunity for a split keyboard in my opinion.

Dygma on another hand has a thumb cluster and built-in wrist rest. However, it’s 60% and is expensive.

As someone, who works a lot in Vim and Terminal, I really need easy access to ESC and symbols like ~ and `.

I've got the barbones waiting for me to put in some silent alpacas and top them with some cherry wob caps. Those caps look great. How does the height compare to your other boards?

1

Zaphoed OP t1_jcalwp3 wrote

It's closer to a G915 laying flat but slightly higher with the normal keycaps

Not heavy at all. Was surprised how light it was compared to the Q3

It was very comfortable using yesterday while WFH

1

davidroberts63 t1_jcapfxg wrote

That sounds great. I had a g915 but couldn't stand the sound or the feel, returned it and went down this mech board route. My kids like the K6 I first bought, but this split is what I was hoping to find.

As I didn't find this keycap theme on Keychron's site (using their customizer - thinking of buying pre-built as it would be my first mechanical keyboard), assuming that I could also get keycaps in a custom theme for a potential Q11? How many options are there for keycaps on the Q11? Assuming any colour would be available? The wheels are turning! :)

Why do they all insist on put the space bar so far to the right? Am I the only person whose thumb isn’t growing out of the bottom of their wrist?
