Here! Although my preferences are weird, either I feel like running the smallest form factor board possible one day or a full battle cruiser the next day. No in-between.

I like extremes too. Daily I use a 36-key and a split 108-key. Both ortho. Also have several 3x10 for portable use, and a 2x4 for one-hand. Thinking of hand-building an 8x24 when KAM/DSA Playground keycaps are available.

the_one_true_big_boi t1_iu3ayet wrote

What's the split 108? Is it a custom board? I have trouble finding large split ortho boards :/

I have the BFO9000. https://keeb.io/collections/bfo-9000. I actually wish it has one more column.

3

the_one_true_big_boi t1_iu3c8sp wrote

Ah man I was hoping you had a different one, I was gonna get the BFO9000 but for some reason shipping to me from Keeb.io is stupid expensive, the keyboard came to ~$600 NZD altogether, which is more than I was willing to spend. I've settled for a Runner 3680, which is smaller but still bigger than my lumberjack, which is the main thing

1

purple_rw t1_iu3e61m wrote

PCB+switch plate+bottom plate is only US$42 total, which is about $72 NZD. Shipping+tax etc costs $500?! That’s a lot!! You may want to search for some open source 6-row ortho keyboard and order the PCB/plates yourself. Could be cheaper, esp if you can sell the extras. I found one: https://github.com/Kyrremann/index-tab 2x6x13 = 156 keys!

2

the_one_true_big_boi t1_iu3eemn wrote

Oh oops, I meant including switches and caps. The keycaps were probably the most expensive part, it is not easy to find compatible keycaps sets for an ortho board that big

1

purple_rw t1_iu3fe8l wrote

There is virtually no sculpted keycap set for 6-row ortho. Usually you’d need to get at least both the base kit for 100% and the ortho kit. For me, I need to get the Colevrak kit too. Even for a 5x15, I want PgUp, PgDn, etc, and many times they only come with the base/full kit. 😓

One option is to go for Signature Plastic’s DSA set. Kitting is more flexible, but it’s a uniform profile.

I'd love a board that's basically an 1800 on the righthand side, compact spacing between the numpad and the rest, but with a shitload of extra keys on the top and lefthand side. I need room for my mouse, but I have plenty of space everywhere else.

2

OpTic_Nibba t1_iu2flgy wrote

it’s a very strange design — the whole board is these really weird cherry MY switches, except the top 2 rows of macro keys, which are cherry black MX switches. also there’s a little screen with a number on it in the top left that tells you which layer of macros you’re on (has 10 layers for the 24 macro keys at the top)!

i saw it on a government auction website sitting with about 10 other worthless membrane keyboards and decided to bid on it just for this keyboard lol

MACRO'S, tapdance, etc

I would suggest you to do it with 3+ rp2040's each with the max amount of macro's [so each macrokey can have 4 macro's tied to it, trough tapdance]

1: the 60% main

2 the left and top clusters [can also be done with 2 RP2040's]

3 the remaining keys

2

Only if it expands the standard layout without changing it, no keys the left of standard 100% left and as long as redundant space is kept to a minimum

It's big and beautiful; it's cool. However. . . Gonna call it like I see it. Keyboards like this must have been fantastic back in the 1980s before most systems had GUI-WIMP or a mouse, back when everything was 100% controlled through the keyboard, and when any sort of portable computer was a rarity. Nobody would design this keyboard today, unless maybe for some super-specialized niche.
