I love my 64 key tester, but it helped encourage an expensive habit of Zealios, so my wife doesn't like it much.

Nice! I had my eye on those but I ended up buying a handful of Akkos and a few more tactile switches. I feel like I can appreciate a tester more now that I have typed and tried so many switches.

Zealios wasn’t even on my radar before this. Will check them out.

And my partner is asking when it’ll be ready so she can play with our new ASMR keyboard 😂

This is exactly how I started lmao

Very very helpful for knowing what type of switch you like and which ones to stay away from

I remember my 64 tester! One of the best investments I ever made in my early keebing days

I gave it away about a year ago. I hope whoever I gave it to did the same.

They don’t even put the keycaps on the switches for you when you buy it?

WeirdArtTeacher t1_is4ulbh wrote

If anyone has a tester for sale I’d be interested (or even for rent? Like send it to me to try and I send it back to you?)

1 switch will not show you anything worthy tbh

I bought the same a bit over a year ago and thought 'isn't this a bit too expensive?'. Now I'm typing on my 400+€ keyboard.

Have fun exploring

I don't get it either, it's such a waste of money.. in the end researching properly and adapting is the most important part. It's not like every switch is a 10/10 right from the start. Going from linear to tactile as an example takes time, but after a while almost every switch becomes super pleasant to use.

Sound is another topic but switches contribute such a tiny amount to that, so it's almost unnecessary to pick switches by how they sound.

Bought a switch tester and found a key I like. Hot-swapped they switch to feel how it is in my board. They in fact do help imo.

Someone should set up a rental system! I want to play with a tester for a little bit too, but it's such a waste to buy one when I'll probably only play with it a few times. I don't have anyone local that I can borrow from. If I could just rent a tester for a day or two that would be amazing!

I’m dumb. I like everything spelled out for me. Maybe when I slid them out of the sleeve they moved around but mine were not 100% in order. Not a big deal though, would definitely buy it again.

Zealios are expensive, but they have sales every now and then.

I have V2 on my main keyboard and have loved them, but decided to go linear recently. Using gateron pro yellows but may give matcha or black inks a try.

Hey man, I really love what you're doing. But ;)

Be sure to look further then these main brand switches. There are so many more options out there that might be your thing.

If you're considering Matcha Lattes, also take a look at Invokeys' new Black Sesames. From what I've heard, they're Matcha Lattes but better in just about every way (note that I haven't tried them myself)

Highly recommend checking out KTT’s offerings. The strawberries and the kang whites are easily some of my favorite sounding and feeling switches. Best thing is they are affordable and punch way above their price points.

Z2_U5 t1_is66srh wrote

Let me just say that I hate linears and a tester only proved that to me.

I don’t think I would’ve knew my extra clicky greens existed without one either. Will recommend.

I just finished building a new hotswappable keeb, but idk what switches I want next. I enjoy a lighter actuation and preferably tactile? Any suggestions? The only tactile I've used are cherry browns and halo trues. Anyone have suggestions on what to get next?

Transient_Simian t1_is6dtk6 wrote

For the price I think T1s, U4s and others are a better buy. I don't know any reason to justify zeal prices with similar switches like I mentioned being like half their cost

3

PutPineappleOnPizza t1_is6plq0 wrote

Yep, but going to a store or getting a small tester is more than enough, a huge tester is just sooo expensive. Like the 72 switch one costs what, 50 something $ ?
To me that's just money wasting, I would even dare to say (oh boy I will get butchered but who cares about reddit points) that testing all the basic cherry mx variants is more than enough to get a general idea of what you could like, with a bit of imagination that is (cherry mx blues could be compared to stronger tactiles minus the click as an example).

codefame OP t1_is6ptju wrote

Right there with you - I had no idea the difference between clicks greens & blues and reds before this.

Completely disagree with these commenters that it’s not valuable or worth it.

1

Psychosynchrony t1_is6tp0g wrote

Ah yes. This is the tester that sealed my "dislike" opinion on clicky switches. There's a lot of redundancy built into it (did I really need examples of every cherry & gateron red, brown, and blue variant? Probably not). Was super fun to compare the different options, though and build a mental scale of how they all 'felt' so I knew roughly which options I liked and disliked. Enjoy it!

whlabratz t1_is7evl8 wrote

Nice! I had my eye on one of their tactile testers - I know I don't like linears and I like my colleagues too much to buy a clicky - but it looks like they stopped doing that

So, some of these switches are actually decent and ~~preference~~, so ignore this guy. But to pipe up and add to the number of recommendations you’ve already gotten:

Linears: Lavenders Gateron black inks v2 (not box stem) Gateron oil kings Tangerines

Tactiles: Anubis Boba U4Ts Aliaz Silent (included in your kit!) Pewters

Oh, I think these sets tend to be a bit old and missing some of the really hot modern switches. Still a very good set, though. You can get samplers from KNCKeys including one that actually allows you to try various tecsee options with different top and bottom materials. Really cool. https://knckeys.com/ , https://knckeys.com/collections/linear-switches/products/switch-sampler-kit, and https://knckeys.com/collections/linear-switches/products/tecsee-diy-switch-ice-cream-series.
