Wait, how can one be a noob at this hobby?

Like, do they not color coordinate their keycaps and switches or something? Do people gatekeep because somebody paired their Tangerine Panda Linears with a $20 Carbon keycap set from Amazon instead of the $500 Matcha Blast keycap set from Drop?

Ngl a lot of people in this hobby tends to be toxic towards new people so yeah ig people feel like they are "noobs" just because others want to gatekeep instead of welcome.

Topre and silent switch boards sounds mushy to me

Oh its entirely possible. I mean I was a beginner in the hobby once, I would have definitely classified myself as a noob back then. For me, those who are in the process of researching for a custom keyboard all the way to those who have built 2-3 boards are what I would consider a noob. Nothing wrong with being new, even Taeha was a noob once. The real issue is people who gatekeep shit.

i'm not sure either, but let's be honest, people can and will find a way to gatekeep literally anything in this hobby lol

I don't care if I don't have the high end boards like you guys. I spent $20 on 2 mechanical boards and I'm happy

I'm not sure where you are, but by me there's a store that buys Amazon returns and sells them at crazy discounts. If you live in a somewhat larger city (mine has about 100k people) there might be one by you.

I got an 89 key Havit for $7 last week.

bending a lot of the switch pins? check

cheap ass keycaps? check

well...they kinda are

when you bottom out a silent switch you hit silicone dampeners. Which obviously would feel and sound mushier than just bottoming out on a solid material

Just go look at r/customkeyboards rules about no plastic

>No Plastic - Expensive plastic (polycarb customs, Korean plastic customs) are acceptable, as is OG plastic, but plastic kits from Taobao/Aliexpress/Amazon/etc. are not.

Lol weirdest elitism, no plastic unless its this specific plastic!

Also hate that the sub is called customkeyboards. In relation to the rest of the hobby, the customization is mid. So many people are doing crazy 3d printed and even hand wired builds. Those are custom imo. r/customkeyboards should be r/bougiekeyboards or something.

happy little accidents

especially when i accidentally dropped a switch stem into lube

Why else would i want a switch that sounds like its drowning?

I'm working on my first custom right now.
It's made from pla with the cheapest reasonable kbdfans caps I could find with gat browns.
I would go all out with the parts and everything, but I have more time than money at the moment.

Also, we really shouldn't be assuming that people who don't have kilobuck level keyboards aren't "serious" or whatever. The hobby grew out of people trying to make stuff better without buying ancient unobtanium keyboards or spinning up a whole manufacturing facility. Someone who spends $40 on lovingly modding a cheap keyboard into something great is just as valid as someone who buys five keycults and pays someone else assemble them. Maybe more, if they're good.

yup, whats funny is that when you consider the parts around it, a build as a whole can end up rather expensive, but if its with a not-so-expensive case/keycap set, then its immediately dismissed, its expensive, but not the type of expensive they're going to value

That’s me. I consider my self pretty knowledgeable about the subject to the point i can figure out some switches and cases only by sound and my goal is to never go high end but to build medium low entry keebs and make them sound and feels as good as a high end keyboard. To this day, mi most expensive keeb os a gmmk pro and i made it sound amazing.
