Over the last month or so I got heavily into designing and building handwired keyboards and in this photo is every one I’ve made in that time. I’ve been forced to slow down a bit but soon will have something I think you will find very interesting. I don’t want to say too much about it but the one thing I will say is: DB15.

You can also find all my boards along with their 3D print case files and source for free on GitHub.

I also make a lot of videos on my boards and various topics related to them over on YouTube.

certainly but I wouldn't underestimate it. it's powerful enough to distract you 24/7 and pull you in the weirdest rabbit hole for a long, long time and not much better than online gambling, porn or other obsessions. if can you make any money out of it great, if not you might want to take better care of yourself

and we both know it's not over the last month alone but much longer. not saying, one cannot design/print/build that bunch of keyboards in one month but it takes way longer to develop your taste and go ("mentally") from staggered to ortho to merged-splits layouts

btw, you should learn pcb design with kicad, you could create way more keyboards with much less work haha

however the photo of you and the keyboards is actually very nice! ❤️

I've really enjoyed your posts of all the keyboards you've made. Going to buy some filament later this week. So a friend can print the Scotto Alps files for me. Going to be my first handwired 😊

Wow thats so fucking awsome, they all look so good, especially the white and purple one. Man that looks clean

i really enjoy 40% myself and own a decent 3d printer, maybe i should try some handwiring too. Got any tips?

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itmdmw5 wrote

Thanks :)

You should definitely give it a go, I think you’ll find it very rewarding. I have an entire video on how to build them: https://youtu.be/hjml-K-pV4E

I’m working on another video right now that will go over some more advanced techniques.

Are you also planning on making a FULL split keyboard like a ergodox?

3

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itnswa1 wrote

I ordered some RP2040 boards today with the intention of making something larger than I normally do.

2

darknessblades t1_itpcqev wrote

Is it a split keyboard ergodox/moonlander Hybrid? [this is what I am planning on making]

2

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itpopjz wrote

It will be split. Not sure as to what else yet.

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itpqo5g wrote

Nice. Are you going to use filament for that hinge or how will that work?

1

darknessblades t1_itpxdog wrote

Not sure, [The layout as I designed it is still quite basic to get a feel for it] [could change the hinge mechanic] but it will be either Filament and some m3 bolts, or a TRRS connector

{aliexpress}

/item/1005002511925055.html?

[Which will be the way the thumbcluster is connected]

So in essence the Thumb-cluster is a stand-alone unit [without arduino], that can be removed if not needed
--------
Not the best at programming with QMK,

So I could use some help on that front. {it will be hand-wired, so no RGB yet}

Already uploaded the VIA definitons file, so I am getting there step by step

I have to get access to a 3d printer. I really want to build a scotto36! Love your work!

Thank you :)

I’ve been trying to sell prints of the cases/plates to fund the project over at scottokeebs.com if you’re interested.

Pribprib t1_itmpqtl wrote

Damn, I love handwiring but the amount of money you must have spent on switches and caps is amazing

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itmpvvp wrote

Luckily I had a lot of stuff from the past few years being in the hobby that I was able to repurpose.

The downside is that all my other boards are now empty lol

3

pabloescobyte t1_itmugjy wrote

The legend! Please tell me you are also handwired inside lol. Nice to finally put a face to the work.

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itmusf7 wrote

Now that I think of it I guess I could be considered handwired to some degree since I wear an insulin pump with tubing lol

I'm telling you, handwiring is the most fun and rewarding thing I've done in my 4 years of mechanical keyboarding.

Those are all so nice! I love the Mac throwback but I think my favorite is the greyscale in the lower right. That’s so cool!

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itny4q2 wrote

I have a video specifically on that one. The real Mac throwback is the pink one on the left, it uses Alp Orange switches and keycaps from an old Apple keyboard.

2

mwy912 t1_itnyujv wrote

Thats awesome! I knew it looked like Mac keys, but I didn’t realize it WAS apple keys and alps switches! Found your post with closeup photos. You have done some awesome work! Be proud!

2

dewdrive101 t1_itnzedr wrote

Honest question. Whats your process for designing your cases? Do you get the plate ready and go from there?

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_ito0rmx wrote

I have a video on exactly how I design them :)

But yeah, basically I get the layout ready, then just follow the system I made that works for me.

35 days to be exact. I build my first handwired board on September 19, 2022.

Those look so sick! I'm just getting into the hobby and am looking forward to making having a collection like yours someday!

1

ChanceLuvsKBs t1_ito6yn2 wrote

Also I have a question, how do you handwire KBs? Do you have a video on your YT explaining it or are you able to link me something that explains it?

1

boneskid1 t1_itomgqm wrote

Your how to videos have led to me designing a few myself. Waiting on a new print surface for my printer and then I am going to have a bunch of handwire builds once the weather gets cold!

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_iton9cf wrote

Awesome! You should share them over in /r/handwiredkeyboards once you finish them

boneskid1 t1_itooqhs wrote

That is my plan! Might be a little bit but they will be there. Still trying to work out the cut outs for the pro micro to properly sit in the case too.

1

michel_v t1_itph5g7 wrote

There are companies that do the printing for you, for a reasonable price.

1

Joe_Scotto OP t1_itpnx8c wrote

As another redditor said you can have a company print them for you or you can have me do it. I’ve been trying to sell the cases to support the project over on scottokeebs.com

Not sure how someone who is working full time can have the time, etc. to do something like this.
