This looks epic! I wanna get a 40% ortho soon after learning how to use an ortho and forgetting how to use staggered xD
I assume the case is 3D printed?

the layer lines actually look sick.

I wish I didn't like F-keys as much as I do.

This aesthetic is perfect

Yeah I know, I just really like how this looks in the exact setup you have.

I don't think I'd be able to give up the extra keys, but this really makes me want to try lol

What’s it like having 2 space bars?

Super cool aesthetic! Are the space bars layer keys when held down? Where do you assign arrow keys to?

Space bars are just space bars. I wanted a 6u space, but SP only has 5u mount 6u bars which didn’t work with the board I had. My arrow keys are up, down mapped to Ralt, RGUI and left, right mapped to layer 1 (R Ctrl) + < and >

I code for work. I use the Corne 42-keys, but have since modified my bindings for 36-keys outside of gaming.

You can remap using QMK and layers so each layer has a different layout. I have:

  • Alphas on Layer 0

Thumb cluster, from left to right are:

  • Tap Delete/Hold Layer 2

  • Backspace/Shift

  • Enter/Layer 1

  • Enter/Layer 3

  • Spacebar/Layer 4

  • Tab/Ctrl

  • Numbers on Right Layer 1(RL1), Ctrl+key and Alt on Left Layer 1(LL1),

  • Navigational keys on RL2, custom Symbol mapping on LL2 (I didn't map my symbols like they are on the number row, customized it based on how I think it should go)

  • Functions on RL3, Macros/combinational key press on LL3, togglers for gaming layers (Layer 5 and 6)

  • Numpad on RL4, Mouse keys on LL4

You can also search up Miryoku mapping for ideas.

Oooh this is what I want to move to! I'm using a Preonic with 2x2u spacebars and really don't need four modifiers on the left.

Care to share your layout?

Also chiming in to say, autoshift for numbers/symbols is very powerful on 40's and below, it has let me condense my layers on my QAZ while still remaining just as comfortable as before when I had two different layers for numbers/symbols and shifted symbols

Maybe next thing you can just do a T9 version. Writes like a Nokia.

The BM40 is a good way to go if you're ok with the 2u spacebar layout. It's a great keyboard that can be built for not a lot of money and can be used with QMK or VIA. There's a few options for aluminum cases from KP Republic and you can print something if you want to go that route.

Hitting the F keys on a layer is not hard at all, becomes second nature real quick, I daily drive keyboards smaller than OP's and I have a layer with F1 - F12 arranged in a 3x4 grid kinda like a number pad and I really like it.

This is my keymap on a keyboard with a form factor kinda similar to OP's. And this is my keymap on a smaller 30% keyboard.

The 30% Gherkin was my daily driver for several months, I just moved to a split keyboard 3 days ago, that keymap is just a visual aid to help write the QMK code, I use things like autoshift, capsword and combos on the smaller keyboard that are not represented on the images, but it should give a rough idea on how it's setup. I'm not a programmer, I'm a designer for my use case I need to use the modifiers a lot along with symbols and numbers for Adobe Suite shortcuts that's why I make sure to have the mods on every layer.
