It's a linux machine in terminal mode in a tweaked super 8 viewer. One big benefit has been getting my touch-typing to a level where it is becoming enjoyable.

EDIT: I've scribbled down a few more details:

Looks great. Especially the chrome/silver parts giving me showcar vibes.

I will not lie, I am overly proud of cobbling together something that looks like I want my computer to look like...... so thank you!

I want one of these on my desk! I need 2x2U on mine though.

How are those caps when you're doing sustained typing sessions though? Any fatigue and errant keypresses?

2

edwardianpug OP t1_iw6qx1t wrote

Not too bad, my typing is quieter because the caps don't bottom out in the same way that the old ones did.

As for errant keypresses, hard to say because I do tons of those on any board....

Amazing.

So what's the best way to run znc nowadays so I can keep IRC chat backlogs persistent between desktop and mobile?

poka64 t1_iw74cdw wrote

Run a client like irssi or weechat on a server and use ssh to connect to the server.

How does that work with mobile devices? I don't think either of them supports iOS.

poka64 t1_iw7ukl6 wrote

You will need to use a ssh client on iOS (prompt is a good one).

So beautiful. How does the screen work? Did you replace it?

1

edwardianpug OP t1_iw69ywa wrote

Yup, the innards are just empty space, so putting a pi in there and swapping out the screen was pretty easy.

I personally prefer irssi ;)

This is the most impractically wonderful thing I've seen in here for ages. I love it.

Beautiful! I'm so tempted to get low profile keycaps and switches for my BM40 as I love the way it looks and will probably love the way it feels, but I know I'll be absolutely useless at typing any special characters on it so I'm resisting the draw.

I tried blank keycaps on it for the aesthetic and immediately regretted it as I found it impossible to memorise even a basic 3-layer setup after a few weeks of forcing myself to struggle with it while I waited for the labeled replacement keycaps to arrive.
