About how much money goes into a build like this? It looks amazing.

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixovgtb wrote

Thank you so much!

I paid a total of ~585CAD for everything (taxes and shipping/custom fees included) so that would be around ~440USD. It's definitely not cheap, but I'm so deep in the rabbit hole that I don't even think it's that expensive.

My cheapest board is a pre-built one that I modded and it cost me around 350CAD and the most expensive one I own (or I should say will own, as most of the components were from GBs that are still in production) is set to cost me ~1200CAD.

Needless to say I think I might have problem lol

I love lavenders. The weight is perfect for me and they're so nice lubed.

Great build.

Thanks!

I've got to say, I really love them too. I had been eyeing them for the past few months after seeing a video and I definitely think it was the right choice for this build.

Ohhhh nice! I was wondering if anyone would recognize the city, you've definitely got a good eye, my friend!

What gave it away? The recycle bin or the street? 😅

And thanks, I'm glad you like them!

LordAsthenios t1_ixntlla wrote

At first, the street and balconies, typical of Montreal. Then I saw the recycling bin :)!

Saw the bike path first, then the bin confirmed it. Reminds me of the bike path near Parc La Fontaine

Genuine question. I see lot of people's builds using keycaps with Japanese kana on them. Is half of the subreddit secretly 日本語上手?

13

pingerlol t1_ixnp4kj wrote

it looks good. can someone tell me how you can live without a windows or control key though?

12

Koenigspiel t1_ixoekf7 wrote

I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but my boards rarely do what the legends of the keycaps say. I have layers and layers of all sorts of different functions on my 40%s all the way up to my TKLs that do exactly what I want/need. No one ever 'lives without' a key.

I would even argue my smaller keyboards, like my Corne, that appear to be 'missing' a ton of physical keys can end up with more keys that are easier to reach than much larger boards. Example being, there's no number row on the Corne but by simply holding down one of the Fn keys I end up with a full numpad that I can mash out numbers in without looking and with one hand; something I'm unable to do with just the standard row of numbers above the alphas. It makes those keys kind of pointless, especially if you have to move your hand to reach a key.

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixnufak wrote

Thanks!

As for your question, this is also a totally new layout for me so I'll definitely need some time to adjust, but I remapped the caps lock to be my control key and I use Fn to use the caps lock.

I do have a windows key though! It's the "code" key. The keycaps set didn't include a windows one so I did what I could.

It's definitely a weird layout, but so far I'm liking it

5

Stebeff t1_ixpw30j wrote

Caps lock is a useless key to me, so I switch it to the windows key. On a hhkb I have the control where the caps lock is and my windows key on the right shift when pressing the fn key. It takes a while to learn but i prefer it now and even find my TKL to slow because I have to leave my home row for just some arrow keys. It remains preference of course.

AndrejPatak t1_ixnr1m2 wrote

Yeah, I never understood win-keyless keyboards either. I'd assume they're using some other os like arch with bspwm but even that is tough without those two!

Grimlogic t1_ixoxqnc wrote

Based on what I've read, a lot of people who get WKL do it for the aesthetic, mainly.

I've had plenty of opportunities to get a WKL keyboard but always opt for WK (or HHKB layouts for 60%s). I work and game with Windows so I really get mileage out of it.

I got a HHKB layout QK60 too! How did you get yours so early, did you order from QwertyKeys?

2

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixoirxb wrote

I hope you get to enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine!

And yep directly from their website and you know what's even more surprising? Some people have received theirs even earlier than I did. On their discord there was a guy who received his literally 2 weeks after the GB ended!

I was kinda jealous, then a week later I got my shipping notification and it arrived within the same week.

Gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised by how good QwertyKeys' customer service is!

2

zerixx t1_ixon0zt wrote

That's awesome!! 2 weeks turnaround time is impressive. I'll be ordering directly from them next time, did you get dinged with customs ?

1

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixou8kd wrote

I think I had to pay something like 40$ of custom fees, but it still was cheaper than buying from a local vendor in the end, so I decided I'd try it directly from QK!

Also, I ordered a R1 QK65 from a local vendor and still haven't received it because of some logistics issue, so I didn't want to take a chance and have that happen again.

Honestly if the extra shipping + custom fees are less than 100$ I would 100% always go with ordering directly from QwertyKeys

2

zerixx t1_ixoxelf wrote

Good call man. Thanks for all the info!

Nice build! Excited for my QK60! May I ask what color the bottom is?

2

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixoj02i wrote

Thanks!

I got the white bottom with the Chroma weight! I originally wanted to go with the gold plated one, but my QK65 already has one so I thought I'd switch it up a bit

2

Truth-Turtle t1_ixol0hh wrote

Nice Build! I bought a QK60 HHKB layout myself. What plate did you choose and how do you like it?

2

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixowmf7 wrote

Thank you so much!

I got the Alu plate and so far I'm really liking it! IMO it's really the perfect middle ground if you don't want your board to sound too high pitched like with a brass plate for example, or too low pitched as with a POM plate.

I hope you enjoy building yours as much as I enjoyed building mine!

2

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixr7mde wrote

I know it sucks seeing everyone get theirs before you do, but if that can make you feel any better just know that I ordered a R1 QK65 and I still haven't received it :(

1

rosskap t1_ixub972 wrote

how do you play without control? :O

2

jbdelcanto OP t1_ixuj8zj wrote

I actually remapped it to the caps lock!

It was definitely a bit weird at first since it was my first time using this layout, but I think I have pretty much fully adapted to it now!

As for actual caps lock it's under the exact same key, but I need to press the function key at the same time to use it! But that's pretty much how this whole layout works at this point.
