Yeah, it took me 10 hours to lube all the keys in my TKL keyboard ... and I need to redo half of them because I did it on two different days and the sound is inconsistent....

It's all part of the hobby. I find it relaxing. Put some music on that hifi.. relax and get into the flow :)

Prebuilt gang, baby :D

All jokes aside, I haven’t had a chance to try anything like that yet, but I’m excited to actually build my first keyboard. I’m looking forward to the headaches

You will eventually find your groove and shortcuts to cut the time... after lubing like 5 batches of switches lol. But even then it still takes me hours to lube switches

I just pay people at this point because my mental health literally degrades and it stresses me out and I go insane lol. Just me though but lubing switches is only something I've done three times after being in the hobby for 2 years

I just finished lubing a 60% yesterday. First 10 switches in and I already gave up lol. Had to do it by batch. I still have a tkl and 65% board that I have to lube, but I'm still trying to find the motivation to do so.

Jaja my wife just hates when I lay out all the parts and especially Krytox. I usually start very enthusiastic but when I'm around the 30th switch I become grumpy and start asking myself existential questions like: " is it really true that Cherry Switches will last more than 100k actuations"....

That's the reason why I don't lube the bottom housing anymore and only lubing the stem and bag lubing the springs

This is secretly my main reason to use a 40%

All part of the process. Helps you appreciate the result even more imo.

I still have a few gat milky yellows laying around, didn't buy factory lubed ones on purpose because I wanted to go through it with them again until my Adam kit arrives... or something like that.

Part of me is hating myself for doing that, part of me is looking forward to spending time with my new stuff. I just have to start...

I put down 3 bowls: one for stems and two for housings then bag lube springs then just start lubing and putting together switches while i watch a taeha or alexotos vod c:

Its a lot more pleasant if you did something on the side while you lubed your switches. For me I like watching a show though I'm mostly listening to the show rather than watching so I don't get sidetracked too much

Best advice is to do it like an assembly line. Do one part completely and then do another. For instance I lube all the bottom housing, then I lube the spring, then the stem, and then top housing if I need to. Before this I was lubing each switch individually and it was taking ages. Keep it up! You’ll be happy with the result!

I made a custom keyboard to use in the office because I can't take the membrane keyboard anymore and while it was nice to do something tactile that didn't involve looking at a screen it took so long to finish the job. ...but I kind of want to do another.

i love doing this. It‘s so calming. I watch a good series while lubing my switches, and everything is fine for a moment 😌

I found lubing switch can be relaxing. The key is to only lube 10-20 at a time, and take a bit of rest in between

Mcinfopopup t1_j1zr4yj wrote

Lubing doesn’t bother me at all. At this point I kind of like it. I use 4 solo cups a ziplock bag and a little lubing stand that lets me set the bottom in. I separate all the pieces into their cups and the springs into the bag. Then it goes in this order for me lubing, ten at a time. Base, switch film, spring, stem, top. Then I click them back together and repeat.

I've still got 3 packs of drops new panda X switches that I need to lube up for my Sense75.

I keep telling myself, I will get those switches lubed this weekend. Weekend comes and either totally forget or just don't feel like doing it. Sooner or later the keeb will show up so I gotta get crackin on it this weekend.

Agreed, if you want the best keyboard possible, buy it from someone skilled. If you build it by yourself, the time it takes will be insanely unproductive. Researching what I want, learning to use CAD, learning about 3D printing, browsing shops, and doing everything by myself. I have spent time worth 10k on my keeb, worth probably only 200 due to poor craftsmanship and inferior tools. No way am I going to complain about lubing taking a few hours.

when i first got into the hobby during COVID, I had the whole lube set up and i probably have close to a 1000 switches lubed right now. Now i exclusively buy factory lubed swiches lol. Oil Kings and AKKO's lubed line were game changers for me, I'll never lubed another switch in my life

StayFrosty7 t1_j20miir wrote

Buy switches that don’t need to be missed and get stabs that are easily tuned!! Been here for years and it helps a ton (unfortunately I have an unhealthy obsession with cherry blacks which need all the modding possible LOL)

HargroveFan t1_j21upc7 wrote

I can be a bit of a perfectionist so the lube application consistency part takes so much focus. And after focusing on every switch for hours I'm exhausted. I get stressed out if I start to notice an inconsistency between the switches after spending so much time on them. it also feels like a crazy chore so I would infinitely put it aside.

I used to do two sets of 120 a week when I worked from home. Since I started my new job and I have less time at home I haven't lubed more than a few (literally) Bolba Gums-- and I don't miss it. It's an awful hobby. It takes forever and your back hurts.
