Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6cxpmt wrote
I tried that but I kept slapping the void above the Enter key because that's where I usually find it. Also, in a kajillion years of typing, I don't think I've ever needed the right shift key! I find this layout a lot easier to deal with than what I had yesterday (I posted other pictures of this strange ISO Q9 misadventure.)

pollt t1_j6dtqsq wrote
Capslock as backspace works like a charm.
samvvell t1_j6dve5f wrote
40% boards typically lop of Caps Lock to manage fewer rows. Tab and Shift are brought together.
ilovezezima t1_j6h64x3 wrote
Otherwise what could work (as an anti caps lock method)
Left control moves to capslock
Fn + shift for capslock
| \ key becomes backspace (fn makes it delete)
Old left control becomes | \
That keeps it somewhat natural (apart from the |\ key but either you barely use it and so it doesn't really matter where it is or you use it quite a bit so you'd get used to it).

Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6d0ot0 wrote
Because I would throw this keyboard out the window if I had to press FN that often!
flembag t1_j6d1hwp wrote
Idk. I've used tons of programs where you have to use shift+return to get a carriage return, and the. Crtl+return to submit your entry. It's not as bad as you think.
Also, if you don't ever make a mistake typing, you never have to use your fn+enter to delete something. It would force you to get really good putting your thoughts to text.
Also, I generally only use one of the shift keys. So I would consider using the other one for an enter.
Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6d2omw wrote
I type a lot, but I make mistakes all the time and often rejig a sentence. It's really a case of old dog, new tricks - as much as possible I want to avoid diving into different layers.
flembag t1_j6d35qa wrote
"I want to avoid diving into different layers because I type so much and often have to reframe and contextualize my prose."
Then why did you build a minimalist board? Sounds like you're trying to force an ok tool at doing something that a different tool would excel at.
Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6d4xnn wrote
If it doesn't work out I can always grab me a Q2 but other than the delete key situation (which I think I have solved) I'm not really having any problems with the Q9. It is a weird keyboard - and I wish I'd bought the ANSI version! - but it's lovely to type on.
StrickenForCause t1_j6e7214 wrote
Don’t mind that person. Nothing wrong with having a minimalist board that suits your needs. I write shorthand professionally in real time on a 65% board and have had to do some silly things like swap shift with ctrl to get everything just the way I need it for my purposes. All that matters is that the layout reflects your individual needs, and only you know what those are!
heyitscassio t1_j6eis7f wrote
Even here with my 30% splits that I use I have a dedicated backspace. It happens that making mistakes is pretty common, so it's convenient to have the backspace easily accessible.
You could use combos, it would be more convenient than a layer for some people.
flembag t1_j6eoqhs wrote

Thank you so much for your humble clarifications. I would have never thought that those two keys would be both backspace and enter. I would have thought that the backspace would be a second enter key due to the ISO layout.

Recently, I had a similar thought about using an ISO-Enter keycap upside down to combine Tab and CapsLock into a single Tab key. Unfortunately, the stem receptacles are not properly located for that, but otherwise the keycap woud fit. Just, some silly thought…

Get yourself a 65% or 75%.
From your own comments you even contradict yourself in the manner of getting a 40% but not willing to learn / use the layers or function keys as often for these basic tasks.
I've looked at 40% and yeah it does look interesting. And I 100% agree, I'd throw the keyboard out the window too if I had to use FN keys to use simple strokes as backspace. 😂
Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6e4tha wrote
I don't mind using layers for numbers, as I don't often need them. Ditto #$%^ etc. But digging for very basic things which I use every few seconds would be truly masochistic. I have a few more standard keyboards, an Epomaker and couple of Kludges - but the heftiness of this is lovely so if I do cave in and revert to something bigger it will probably be a Q2 or something like that. An altogether different kind of quality and really nice to type on.
IndependentAlive2587 t1_j6e5vuy wrote
Haha I can imagine, even though I really don't see the beneficial standpoint of 40% (yet), I've come to really like their formfactor and niche.
I've come from different sizes and happily landed on 75% as my last one now.

Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j6hfdsb wrote
It's more about the position of the key relative to "enter". I'm not mega speedy and the mistakes aren't usually spelling mistakes, just a reconsideration of sentence structure etc.
