I made the mistake of buying an ISO layout Q9 barebones. I usually use the ANSI layout. I thought I'd just copy the keys from a product photo of, say, a complete UK Q9, but then I realised Keychron doesn't sell the Q9 ISO in a completed form. I couldn't find a picture anywhere of a completed Q9 with ISO layout.

Luckily my keycaps - which arrived today - have multiple sizes for shift keys etc. Buuuut only the smallest shift key fits here. There are no stabilisers for what I'd call a normal size shift key. This creates a blank spot between shift and Z. I started out with ZXC etc one step to the left.. which moves the problem to the right side, and puts those keys in the wrong place.

Has anyone put one of these things together? Isn't it weird that they don't have stabilisers for the left side shift key? I can't believe they don't provide any diagram or anything to show how it's supposed to look.

Looking at iso layouts on 65's I think that should be backslash.

Isn't there supposed to be \ slash like this?

I plugged it in and at the moment it's mapped as squiggly Spanish thing and a grave(?) accent. I have a key like that but it's from the top row and a completely different shape! Since I don't need that key at all I will figure out something to put there instead and try to map it with the software which I haven't even looked at yet.

I've got my < > next to shift, using ISO (that's how it works on Swedish layouts)

Edit: Ah, googled it, looks like UK ISO got tilde grave accent next to shift. On Nordic (and German?) it's < / >.

Keychron’s default keymap has KC_NUBS there (non-US backslash, \ and |). But you can put whatever’s convenient to you there of course.

This is for a 1u pipe key. If your set is ISO and has no 1u pipe key then you are getting the wrong set lol

Nice keycaps what are those?

Haha! I wish I could say! I found them on the German branch of Jeff Bezos's megashop. They're called "UK Keycaps 172 Keys Double Shot SA Profile Layout 6.25u/7u ISO/ANSI Layout Suitable for Mechanical Keyboard Keycap GH60 GK64 RK61"

I thought the packaging itself would give me a sexier name, but they arrived in a brown carton labelled "UK 174 Dark Blue Brown Keycaps." So I guess that's what they're called!

I'm a fan of having -_ key on my main

Comfortable_Mango_11 OP t1_j664jw7 wrote

Yes I have just noticed how often I use "-" ! (So I put it under the + key which I used to fill the gap.)

I've also set the square bracket keys to produce round brackets which I use often. So far I have never once needed square brackets!

Put whatever you want there, based on what you will use. tilde/grave and backslash/pipe are what I would be deciding between, as a programmer.

Wow, an ISO Q9. First one I’ve seen. I even asked keychron for a pic of an iso Q9 and they couldn’t send me one!

I do fancy one. Or do I wait for the V9? Or the V9 pro maybe… :)

Once it’s got the remaining keys installed, can you post another pic?

This board is truly a freak of nature. It's not a 40s board, but more like a numrowless 65. Looks like tons of fun.

Yes without cursor keys I go bananas. That's just too much masochism as far as I am concerned! Though having to press three buttons to get a "!" is err... fairly nuts, I have to say. Maybe I'll make that the mystery button between shift and Z.

Alas I’m not used to ansi, I’m used to iso. And the missing keys make it awkward to try and use a UK keycap which I want to do as I need to use the £ symbol often enough for it to be a problem.

And I know that you can access the £ symbol on the window’s international keycap but that is annoying for other reasons.

I bought an ansi Q2 and ended up replacing it with an iso board.

I do kinda wish that Mac and windows had an option for a keyboard driver where the symbol/function of every key was entirely defined by the keyboard. So I don’t need to worry about what comes up when I press shift 2, I can define it exactly on the board…

Same! I found the Q9 for the first time today while visiting Keychron's site and got quite interested but couldn't find any pictures of complete ISO until this one of yours!

Now that I look at it I must say I'd prefer ANSI on this layout mainly to have proper backspace. Also looks more sleek and symmetrical! On 60%s and up ISO enter is still my thing!

> Isn't it weird that they don't have stabilisers for the left side shift key?

Totally normal in ISO and even in general! 1.25u (LShift) or even that 1.75u Right Shift keycap cant fit stabilizers

Yeah, that’s where I am too. I do love that it takes normal sized caps though. I have a UT47.2 and none of its cap sizes are bloody annoying! I’m hoping that the forthcoming DSS Lightcycle will be a nice match for them..

If OP's set is actually the same from mine, they are Aifei SA keycaps, the colorway of which is based on a set called Wahtsy or something. I bought mine of amazon, and the profile (which is not exactly SA, but more rounded and stuff) is great.

StevesRoomate t1_j68mp15 wrote

Yeah it looks almost like an MT3 profile which is why I was confused. There's a DOMIKEY Knight set with some similar colorways, and some of the Godspeed options also look pretty close to that. It's making me want to do some keycap shopping. Thank you for the info!

just to expand on my previous comment, as I'm now sitting at a keyboard rather than on my phone. yes, I can use QMK or via to configure what scan codes the keyboard sends to the computer, but how those scan codes are interpreted by the OS is at the mercy of the keymap. so for the UK, I configure a button as 3 and the OS decides whether shift-3 is £ or #. I'd like an option for both Mac and windows to allow me to have exactly what character or function every key does configurable from the keyboard alone, and not rely on the keymap to interpret what it thinks I mean.

I know this is a hold-over from back in the days but it feels like something we could fix.

Also, I'd want this key mode to be baked into the OS so that I can still use it on locked down work machines...

PS. incidentally I had to get # from the Mac symbol tool as I have no idea where it is mapped... or even if it is mapped... oh.. it's alt-3 apparently... again, that's a keymap thing, not what I've told the keyboard to generate.

As a Swede, there's a lot of developers at work that actually use iso keyboards but with US keyboard layout because it's less cumbersome to type brackets and curly brackets and so on, but I tried buying one ANSI keyboard once just because they look nice and wow.. couldn't really get it to work nicely with Swedish for some reason. Sticking with ISO. :D

I just got a Q9 last week. But it's not the ISO one thing I really wished I had on the right side of the keyboard would be an extra fn key. Mine only has em on the right side and most of the things I change layers for are on the right side as well. So it is awkward for me to do it all with one hand.

I say put an fn key there even if it is a repeat of one on the right
