Anything with the same/similar layout in a mere mortal price range? I'd like to try an ergo and I love southpaw numpads

Yes! The designer of the board sells fr4 skeleton kits, alongside standalone PCBs (which are obviously both much more affordable) so you can try the layout! There are also open-source acrylic case files for getting your own case cut with the standalone PCB.
