"Today" - Smashing Pumpkins. The song was written by Billy Corgan while feeling massive suicidal urges. The whole idea of it is to play on what he's saying.

"Today is the greatest day I've ever known, can't live for tomorrow, tomorrow's much too long" This lyric is about how he wants to commit suicide, and how he can't wait until the next day and he'll be dead anyways. I also just love how he says "can't live for tomorrow" instead of "can't wait for tomorrow," just a tiny detail I've always appreciated.

It’s most likely about everyone being prescribed Prozac in the 90’s - there’s no time to cry… happy, happy…

and/ or it could be a phrase that Michael Stipe found on a mistranslated CPP propaganda poster about the student protestors at Tiananmen Square that described them as Shiny Happy People…. meet me in the crowd…

More the ups and downs of living with depression. How moods change quickly, days and weeks go by feeling the same things over and over again. Maybe that's just me though.

Depressing and suicidal?

Jonestown_Juice t1_ja8dmnq wrote

The lyrics, yes. It's certainly up for interpretation but these lyrics stand out to me:

>Oh just burn down the house!
>
>Burn down the street!
>
>Turn everything red and the dream is complete
>
>With the sound of your world
>
>Going up in the fire
>
>It's a perfect day to throw back your head
>
>And kiss it all goodbye!

The way I interpret the lyrics is someone trying to convince someone to just forget about their troubles and be happy. But the subject of the song says it's too late for all of that and, instead, they're going to take the route described above. "Turn everything red and the dream is complete".

4

MiffyCurtains t1_ja8g8pr wrote

To be honest, I wasn't looking much past the unambiguous "Let's get happy!"

I was listening to Having A Blast by Green Day earlier today and it had those self destructive vibes while being an upbeat song

I'm losin' all my happiness

The happiness you pinned on me

My loneliness still comforts me

My anger dwells inside of me

I'm taking it all out on you

And all the shit you put me through

Well, no one here is getting out alive

This time, I've really lost my mind, and I don't care

So close your eyes and kiss yourself goodbye

And think about the times we've spent and what they've meant

To me, it's nothin'

Gin Blossoms - Lost Horizons

Written by the late Doug Hopkins, it highlights his issue with alcoholism that would ultimately lead to his suicide but to a happy, fast-tempo jangley sound the Gin Blossoms would become known for.

"The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories
I never thought I'd still be here today
Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves"

A lot of David Bazan's (aka Pedro the Lion) work fits this. His solo album Curse Your Branches is a great example. The whole album deals with alcoholism, losing faith, and being a husband and father while dealing with it all. Even with that subject matter, songs like Please, Baby, Please sound like they could be in a Disney movie if you didn't tune into the lyrics. Bless This Mess is another song from that album that fits. Regardless of whether its what you're looking for, the album is amazing.

this is a j-rock song I found thanks to Clone hero. The English name is, "I'm getting on the bus to another world, see ya!"and it's by TUYU.

The whole song is super peppy, upbeat, and energetic and happy...but the lyrics are basically about a girl (the lead singer of the group) who feels depressed and suicidal, wanting it all to end due to bullying and stuff, but she's happy about it.

Lyrics vid for you, english translation's in the comments
