Originally long hair in rock music was a sign of rebellion, but then it became something common. The reaction to rockstars cutting their hair was almost the same: "they turned away from rock", "they're not cool anymore", "they went pop", "they're boooring" or something like that.

I wonder if hair length still matters? Do people still have strong reactions to musicians cutting their hair? Sure people are more acceptable of short hair these days, fans tend to focus on the music instead of the appearance, but there might be those who miss the long hair.

I’m being serious. In my opinion it never did. Metal head my whole life. I’ve had gentleman’s haircuts and had hair that would almost snap my neck when I sat down if not careful. The hair never mattered. I guess other people think differently but it’s just hair. Don’t cut it for a few years it will get long. Got a goatee growing so I can dye for seeing pantera. Probably be close to a foot long by then.

No I meant OP. I’m 100% in agreement with you. I was born in 1961 and have seen a lot of changes. I’ve had a beard, goatees, a buzz cut and hair well past my nips, shoulders and a lot in between, lol. Be who you want to be. :)

Like most G-Heads believe, I also think the length of groundbreaking Jazz genius Kenny Gs hair doesn't impact the music he makes.

It is purely reflective of his rebellious nature.

This is probably also true of heavy metal musicians too.

I grew up with 80s hair bands as the soundtrack to my life, so I'm biased here- but my love for men with long hair has never faded away, in fact even at age 50 I still prefer it, and think any man (musician or not) looks 10 times better with long hair. As for musicians, they look silly headbanging with short hair, lol

I used to have hair right down my back but I am middle aged now and the tragedy of long hair is it can look great when your young and terrible when your old and there in lies the tragedy of long hair for men. Ah but I looked great when I was young and modest too!

If you base someone's validity/value as a rock/metal musician purely or mostly on the length of their hair, you are elitist, gatekeeping, shallow lowlife scum. Musical skill and hairdo are not related in the slightest, and caring this much about people looking a certain way you think they should is insanely cringeworthy.

Not really, rock/metal is a bit more about the fans these days. Imo that stuff is only relevant when the mainstream picks back up on it.

If people are used to seeing you with long hair, then cutting it all off will get a strong reaction.
