If you’re into rap and/or allowed to choose music with explicit lyrics, then I highly suggest you check out an album by Mick Jenkins called The Water[s].

It’s literally all about water, and every track sticks to that theme. Whether it be the main focus of the song or through subtle references with some pretty clever wordplay. Not only that, but the songs are genuinely great tracks sonically and I still play them somewhat regularly to this day. I could honestly say so much more about the record, but I’ll let you be the judge of that. However, I think it speaks it for itself lol. Anyways hope you’re able to give it a listen and perhaps use it for your class!

Funeral For A Friend - Tales Don't Tell Themselves.
A concept album about a fisherman caught in a storm and becoming adrift before eventually shipwrecked on an island. Meanwhile his wife and child in his fishing village fear him lost to the sea and come to terms with it. Specifically All Hands On Deck Part 1 and 2.

For the more metalcore, 36 Crazyfists mentioned water and waves across a lot of their songs. They have albums called The Tide And It's Takers or Collisions And Castaways, or even the song Elysium from Rest Inside The Flames was one of the first I thought of that even mentions an ocean.

In a pop-punk sense, Alkaline Trio have the underrated Wash Away from a Tony Hawk's soundtrack, more about rain than large bodies of water.

Astronautalis - Skeleton (everyone’s favorite)

It’s from his album The Mighty Ocean and the Nine Dark Theaters which might have better examples.

The song takes place on a beach, and the chorus features imagery of a young couple jumping off a bridge. The song itself mirrors TS Elliot’s The Waste Land in a way, I think. With its focus on age and beauty. Getting old is the theme.

Frightened Rabbit - Swim Until You Can’t See Land

This uses the ocean as sort of a metaphor. Staying on land is too difficult, so the singer starts to swim. Partially provoked by an unnamed woman, and partially by his desire to escape his past. Drowning in the ocean would be preferable to staying on land.
