Basically what the title says, since there is a big four for metal and thrash I was wondering what the big four would be for it’s neighbor and counterpart…which is HARDROCK

That gets hard because there's so much overlap between hard rock and heavy metal and a bit of debate to which bands belong in which categories.

Heavy metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead
Hard rock: Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, Scorpions, Aerosmith or Deep Purple

For me… Ozzy, Alice In Chains, GNR, and Iron Maiden

Interesting exercise. I think two are no brainers: Led Zep and AC/DC, but it’s a dogfight for the other two slots between Deep Purple, Van Halen, Guns n Roses, Kiss and Aerosmith. You could even throw Def Leppard in there.

Automatics are AC/DC and Zeppelin. From there, it's all personal preference. Could easily make arguments for VH, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Queen, or tons of hair metal bands.

Personally, I'd say Thin Lizzy and VH.

AC/DC and Guns N Roses are enough by themselves frankly. A lot of people will want to auto-include Led Zeppelin, but to me they're really more just hippies on the heavier end of blues rock than poster boys for hard rock.

I think this needs to further distinguish between Classic Rock and Hard Rock.

Sure, they're great. I'd probably file them under garage rock more, but they're still solid picks. If I had to round out the top four ultimate hard rock bands myself I'd think about acts like The Cult, Motorhead, Def Leppard, Rose Tattoo, maybe ZZ Top.
