I pretty much started this 4 years ago. iTunes made it easy. Driving my wife crazy. But I am 59, so she gave up trying to change me.

Is there anything else, really?

Frank Zappa. So varied and vast. 60~something albums across almost all genres at the time of his life.

NordicDrummer t1_jdbefty wrote

I almost put Zappa as my choice. The guy was amazing at his craft.

11 LPs + Magical Mystery Tour (double EP) + ...

  1. Please Please Me
  2. With The Beatles
  3. A Hard Day's Night
  4. Beatles For Sale
  5. Help!
  6. Rubber Soul
  7. Revolver
  8. Sgt. Pepper's...
  9. Magical Mystery Tour
  10. The Beatles (white album)
  11. Abbey Road
  12. Let It Be

Bonus compilations (that are still considered albums):

  1. Past Masters (which definitely has an LP of "new" songs)
  2. Yellow Submarine (4 "new" + 7 orchestrations by George Martin (obviously the 5th Beatle))

MinerLaurence t1_jdddtem wrote

Okay, okay. I stand corrected. Enjoy

Abbey Road is one of my dessert island albums.

Maybe something that I haven't heard as much of as I probably should, but also something that would take forever to truly know thoroughly.

Would it be cheating to say Mozart? Like every Mozart piece.

If not, and if this is counting albums going forward, I could make an argument for King Gizz.

Ethan_Skywalker4 t1_jdb9tup wrote

Saying a classical composer is actually a super smart move and I feel stupid for not thinking of it!

2

Loud-Path t1_jdg35zi wrote

As a classical musician I have to say you can only play so much Mozart before you become thankful he died at the young age of 35.

2

coffeebean2007 t1_jdg7b35 wrote

lol, have you played Beethoven? I'll never forgive him for making the third movement of the Moonlight Sonata so hard, I am strugglinggggggg to learn it

1

Loud-Path t1_jdg9ykf wrote

Better person than I am :). My daughter is doing piano 4 right now in her music program and for the end-of-semester recital I keep encouraging her to do that. She just looks at me like I am nuts.

1

Oneonthefence t1_jdboof0 wrote

I don’t think it’s cheating! As an opera singer, Mozart’s music has kept me busy for decades. Makes sense to me, and it’s a smart answer!

1

coffeebean2007 t1_jdb29ve wrote

I'd just yeet myself off a cliff rather than be denied my music, but maybe Journey? Or Survivor

They are also a bunch of assholes. Look up their Narduar interview.

1

Squire513 t1_jddtqrf wrote

Are you Canadian? No one knows who that is outside of Canada or cares about that interview. If it makes you feel better, Dave apologized for his interview. It’s irrelevant. Sold out Wembley so guess it didn’t impact their career 😄

1

horsethecam t1_jddvm4j wrote

It’s common decency. And Blur showed none. And you think they are great, and that makes sense.

Ask 100 people if Blur were the Beatles of the 90s.

Even oasis is more of the Beatles of the 90s and that’s a bad take as well.

The Who

Even though they aren’t the Beatles the amount they have evolved and changed sonically is astounding. The started out pop rock and r&b covers then made one of the first proto-punk songs and then created rock operas. Unfortunately their later work is not as great but the first several albums alone are great and innovative. The first album not innovative but some of the songs and the non album singles are pretty good imo.

Edit: Typo

Led Zeppelin. They had so many musical arrows in their quiver (it is true that some of them were outright stolen from other archers).

2

Oneonthefence t1_jdbowun wrote

Coheed and Cambria. Epic storyline, a bunch of albums (20+ years of music now), amazing vocals, and lyrics that go above and beyond some of the more stereotypical cliches. I cannot think of another group I listen to more than I do Coheed!

Bugslugs47 t1_jdbup15 wrote

I could name numerous rock bands and singer-songwriters such as Dylan but I’m going to opt for Beethoven. Never tire of hearing his music of which there is music for every mood.😻

2

coffeebean2007 t1_jdg7rwl wrote

Yeah sure his music is nice until you severely underestimated just how long and hard the Moonlight Sonata is and now when you're into the third movement you realize your mistake but you can't stop now because you already learned the rest of it.

Hands down, it has to Allan Holdsworth. His music has inspired me in so many ways. His out of the box thinking in music composition and playing always puts me in a good mood.

Never even heard of him but now I’m listening. Thanks!

2

NordicDrummer t1_jdbept0 wrote

Nice. I will say he's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. But in the works of Frank Zappa "About Holdsworth, Zappa once said, “Well, there’s one other guy whose work I know should be included in that list who I respect and that’s Allan Holdsworth,” when asked about his favourite players."

Aaron Turner

He's been in multiple successful heavy bands, done tons of side projects, solo work, remixes, and one-time improvisational performances that have been released. I've always at least liked everything I've ever heard, and I love most of it.

According to Discogs (and there's more digital-only on bandcamp), he is credited with the following groups:

  • Isis
  • Old Man Gloom
  • Sumac
  • Mammiffer
  • Doolhof
  • Drawing Voices
  • Greymachine
  • House Of Low Culture
  • Jodis
  • Lotus Eaters
  • Split Cranium
  • Summer Of Seventeen
  • Thalassa
  • The Hollomen
  • Twilight
  • Unionsuit

I feel like that'd be enough to keep me occupied and interested.

Dream Theater

It’s been 12 years, and I still don’t get tired of them. They blew my mind as a ten-year-old and they still blow my mind today.

I’m constantly finding new ways to appreciate them, like learning guitar riffs or solos, or I recently got back into keyboards, and I’m learning how complicated Jordan’s parts can be. He uses lots of simplistic chords like triads, but he’s constantly changing and evolving the voicings, he rarely repeats the same thing twice. I’ve got Through My Words down and most of Far From Heaven. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of them.
